I cannot find any evidence that “What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted”
was issued as a single in any country other than the United States. The
song appears to have been a hit only in the US and Canada. (Both
Canadian trade publications at the time, The Record and
RPM, published separate airplay and sales charts, and in each
publication the song charted only on the airplay chart. I was unable to
find a cassette single in my local record store when this song was a hit,
so instead ordered a 7-inch US single via mail order. Canadian promo
CD singles were usually not produced for individual songs; labels
usually sent radio stations promo CDs with 10-25 songs. “What
Becomes Of The Brokenhearted” was issued by MCA Records Canada
on “CD Compilation #1 - January. 1992” (MCAD-9201). According to
Discogs, the version on this CD runs 3:50, making it the same version
as on the US promo CD single. This appears to be the only other place
this version was ever issued.)
I don’t know if the Fried Green Tomatoes soundtrack was even
issued outside of North America. “What Becomes Of The
Brokenhearted” was issued in the UK and continental Europe in 1993
as Track 3 on the 4-track CD single of “Hope In A Hopeless World”.
According to Discogs, the track runs 4:35, making it the LP version.
On January 25 of this year, CBS in the UK released the 20-CD Paul
Young box set, The CBS Singles Collection 1982-1994. Disc 18 of
this box set consists of the same four tracks as on the “Hope In A
Hopeless World” CD single, with “What Becomes Of The
Brokenhearted” as Track 3. In the descriptions of this box set that I
have seen, I could not find any indication of what version it is, but it is
most likely also the LP version. There do not appear to be any plans to
release this box set in North America.
So there is still no evidence that the commercial single version of “What
Becomes Of The Brokenhearted” has ever appeared on any CD
(commercial or promo) anywhere on planet earth.

Okay so here is my understanding:
1) The 3:42 TM Century is 6 seconds short of the 3:48 on the CD Promo actual running time
2) The 45 version is 4:06, as Aaron restored from the 45.
3) There is a version that is a 4:32 but this does not appear on the 1990 Paul Young album. So where did it first originate. Ron has it as Spotlight on Hits Vol. 4.
So since this is 1992, is the hit version the CD Promo or the 45? I tend to favor the 45 I seem to remember this version on the radio....

To PopArchivist (Richie):
For 3) the 4:32 version is taken from the 'Fried Green
Tomatoes Original Soundtrack' on MCA in 1992.
To answer your question about what version was the
airplay hit, I would gather that the promo 3:48
version got the lion's share of broadcast play because
by 1992 very few stations were carting up 45s or
cassingles and there (to date) hasn't been any
reported cases of the commercial single mix being
released digitally,
It's possible a few stations did prefer the commercial
single mix and therefore did cart it up or ask the
label for a dub or DAT of master.

This is what I've gotten from the thread so far. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
1 - The TM Century 3:42 is the same as what's on the promo CD Single, and there is about 6 seconds of silence after the music
fades out which brings the total track time to about 3:48. So apparently there is no version where the music actually runs 3:48
before fading out completely.
2 - The true 45 version has only ever appeared on the US Vinyl 45 and Cassette Single and nowhere else. Its main difference is
the sax solo which mirrors the chorus of the song, like Ringmaster previously mentioned.
3- The song was only on the "Fried Green Tomatoes" soundtrack when first released in 1992 and not on any of Paul Young's regular
studio albums. I have the FGT soundtrack and can vouch for the running time of about 4 1/2 minutes.
As for which is the Hit Version, I'd go with the Promo CD version. I can honestly say I never heard the 45 version with the
different sax solo on the radio at all, and in fact didn't even know one existed until I read about it here on this thread.

I had to go back through the thread and re-read all the
posts. Jim (Rest in Peace) mentioned that the audio on
his promo CD single extended beyond the 3:42 point but
the audio was so low it would be easy to not hear
anything beyond that point.
Ed, does your promo cd single extend to 3:48?
Did TM Century fade out of the promo CD single earlier
when mastering their CD? They were not known for that
with their Prime Cuts series as everything mirrored the
promo cd singles at the time.
I would think stations would either have played the promo
CD single or the TM Century version.

I looked up the listing on Discogs for the import Paul
Young CBS Singles collection and the listed time on Discogs
would indicate that it's the Fried Green Tomatoes version.

Not to get too far off the subject, but here's a little trivia for anyone who'd like to indulge:
Does anyone know the connection between Paul Young's version of "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted" to the 70's game show, "Match Game"?

Not sure what the connection is Dan.
Another interesting bit of trivia regarding a cover of
this song is that early on in the making of the
Bodyguard movie the makers of the film were considering
having Whitney Houston record the 1966 Motown song for
the soundtrack. Eventually they agreed she cover a
country song instead. The rest is as they say history.

Hmmm, now that's interesting! I can definitely hear
Whitney covering the song and doing it justice. But in
the end, it was probably better that she recorded "that
country song". It ultimately gave her the biggest hit of
her career.

Frequent panelist Fannie Flagg wrote "Fried Green Tomatoes", which Paul
Young covered the song for.
I will also add that I only heard the version with the freeform sax solo when this
was a current as well as a recurrent. I think it's fair to say that is the version
that was the hit. The fact that the 45/Cassingle Mix isn't even on YT proves its
obscurity.

Correct! The full title of the book she wrote is "Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe". I brought
the subject up because I'm a big
"Match Game" fan and I still watch the reruns, even though I saw many of them 40+ years ago when they were
first on. Fannie Flagg also usually sat
in the same seat on "Match Game" as another one of my favorite gals, Betty White.

This version on YouTube claims to be the 7" Version of the song, but obviously it's not because it doesn't have the correct sax solo that's similar to the
chorus. I guess someone just edited the Soundtrack Album Version to match the running time of the 45.

In comparing the single and album versions, it sounds to me like the "Ooohs" of the background singers on the intro sound a little closer up in the
single mix, whereas on the album version they sound a little further back. The single mix also sounds a little brighter to me in general.
Or, maybe it's just my imagination...lol.

Could be just EQ, not uncommon to make the radio versions brighter.

Yes, that's clearly a remix and not an EQ adjustment. Those backing vocals are
not prominent in the LP version or any other version.
