That's good news indeed, Brian. I just hope "Along Comes Mary" will be mastered from a tape source and not from vinyl.

Meanwhile, I hope you'll continue to keep us in the loop regarding first-time-on-CD appearances of mono versions! It's my understanding that the mono 45 version of the Chipmunk's "Christmas Song" is set to make its debut on Ace U.K. import label's excellent London-American Label Year by Year series sometime soon!

Still more companies are beginning to release mono
collections. Two new country collections are coming from
Omnivore Recordings here in Los Angeles, for Merle Haggard
and Wanda Jackson. Haggard will have "The Complete Capitol
'60s Singles," featuring both the A- and B-sides, all from
the mono singles masters, and Jackson will get "The Best of
the Classic Capitol Singles," also from the mono masters.

I think it's really exciting that more companies are
starting to embrace these long lost mono mixes.

Louis Armstrong's "Hello Dolly" will be the latest #1 hit to make its mono CD debut, on Ace's "The London American Label Year By Year: 1964," due on May 27th.

I know he didn't have any top 40 singles, but a mono Miles Davis album collection is coming in November from Sony:

It looks like Clarence Carter's 1970 smash hit "Patches" will finally see the light on CD in its original mono 45 version.

I was wondering that myself, but I haven't heard any definite word on if they're mono or not. I know Vol. 1 was, but that doesn't necessarily mean Vol 2. will be.

I've had a few promo 45's of Patches since I started record collecting. One was a one sided copy in mono, one had the song on both sides in mono, and I could swear I once had a copy that was a mono/stereo promo, but I don't remember for sure (I'm far too young for memory failure but it seems to be happing a lot lately). I do remember the copy with it on mono on both sides did say MONO on both labels. Apparently the only one I still own is the one sided mono promo. I was never wild about the song, which would explain why I only have the one copy still. If it did exist on a stereo promo, it's possible the stereo version would be what ends up on the cd.

For whatever reason, Atlantic was slow to release stereo
promo singles of soul acts. In addition to "Patches", I
have several early 70s promos by Wilson Pickett that are
mono/mono, well after rock promos were mono/stereo.

King Floyd "I Feel Like Dynamite" Kent CD was just released and has all his
70's Chimneyville singles; including Groove Me and Baby Let Me Kiss You in
mono.

Looks like I was right to be cautious. Samples are up on the Ace website and Patches and its flip side are both STEREO.

bad news!!

I received a reply from Ace regarding this:

"In compiling the Clarence Carter Singles, we aimed to use the best tape versions still in existence. Sadly in the case of several of these singles - including Patches - the mono masters no longer appear to exist, in other cases the stereo single master is the one that has disappeared."

Save your money. While the packaging says "mono" both these tracks are the
stereo lp versions.

Big letdown.

The 2013 Friday Music remastered and expanded Chicago III has the mono
45 edit of "Free." It runs 2:21

On "Free" I think "edit" only refers to editing off the music that preceded the horn start on Chicago III, like the stereo single intro.

Stock copies were all stereo as far as I know.

And the DJ mono side sounds like a fold down to me, I can't hear any real difference.

Lowdown on the other hand clearly had a dedicated mono presentation on the DJ mono side, it starts louder, (had more consistent levels, probably a little more compression) EQ for AM radio and at 1:23 where you can clearly hear Cetera sing "oh yeah" on the stereo version, you can just barely hear him say that on the mono side.

So, I'd rather have the mono on Lowdown available, but that would have been too much of that song for the CD, as they have the Japanese version of Lowdown on the CD as a bonus track.
