So the spoken intro will be restored?

Yeah, I find that puzzling, too, since there is nothing from the "Bad" album, remixes or otherwise, that was only released on vinyl. But 90% of the people working at Sony Music were probably still in school when the "Bad" album was released, so few there really know what they're talking about.
Btw, the spoken word intro is on this two track CD (actual run time for "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" is 4:22 not 4:17 as stated on the back cover).

Cool! At least they got the final product right!

Bad – I'm not sure if the LP version is the same
as the single mix. It's VERY hard to tell. Both the
Japanese CD maxi single (which is still in print) and the
US promo CD single list it as "Single Mix," and it does
say it was remixed by Bruce Swedien. To my ears, the
Single Mix may be slightly flatter, and the vocal just a
hair more up front. But it's difficult to tell... they
may in fact be identical. It was not issued as a
commercial CD single in the US -- the only single from
"Bad" that was not. The US promo CD matched the Japanese
maxi-CD single. A maxi-CD was also released in the UK,
but it contained only the dance mixes, not the single
version.

There is some interesting info in the Wikipedia article for the album:

Wikipedia wrote:
"Bad" – The original mix was replaced with the 7" single mix. The most notable difference is the lack of horns in all the choruses except for the last two. Horns are also missing from the second and third pre-choruses. The rhythm guitar during the choruses is also turned up along with the hi-hats.

Can anyone confirm this?

yes it's true. same with IJCSLY and Dirty Diana. all
three were replaced with their single mixes on ALL of
the Austrian and Swiss pressed Bad Cd's - for the UK and
Europe from 1988 onwards. i don't know about the US
pressing.

The Way You Make Me Feel and Smooth Criminal were also
replaced with alternate versions.

i notice no difference with the rhythm guitar and hi-hats
during Bad - but horns Yes!

Thanks, guys. I can back up Waldo's confirmation. I always knew SOMETHING sounded different about the "Bad" single, but I could never put my finger on it. So, yes, there are no horns on the first two choruses in the single version of "Bad," but there are on the album version. (They're just brief horn blasts -- "You know I'm bad -- bad, bad [horn], really, really, bad."

I've updated my discography accordingly.

Great catch, gentlemen! So has the original LP version of "Bad" ever appeared on CD other than on the early pressings of Michael Jackson's Bad album?

Not sure. It will be interesting to see if the upcoming 25th Anniversary edition will contain the original mix of those songs.

i don't think so. it certainly hasn't appeared on any
Michael Jackson compilation to date. as far as i'm aware
only IJCSLY and Smooth Criminal are the only Bad album cuts
to have appeared on regular various artists compilations.

Brian, you should update the info on Billie Jean since we have since learned
that the original pressings of Thriller used the 4:57 mix we hear in the video.

Done! I also updated "Beat It" to point out that the true 45 length is available on the Tour Souvenir Pack.

Well, this one evaded my radar for nearly 22 years.

The b-side of the "Remember The Time" 7" states that it is the Underground Club Mix of "Black Or White" with a listed run time of 3:33. The cassingle instead lists the Clivilles & Cole Radio Mix of "Black Or White", also with a listed time of 3:33.

The CD maxi contains mixes by both names, and the Clivilles & Cole Radio Mix is indeed 3:33 and matches what is on the cassingle. The Underground Club mix is a completely different mix of the song and runs 7:26.

Was this a mistake on the label of the 7" (meaning it actually plays the Clivilles & Cole Radio Mix) or does it actually differ from the cassette release?

And while we're on the subject of MJ b-sides, I notice "Get On The Floor" was used several times as a b-side in the US... the listed time is closer to that of the remixed version more commonly found on CD pressings of the Off The Wall album. Anyone know if any of these used the original LP mix instead?

Thanks! Any info is greatly appreciated!

I timed the version of "Black Or White" on the B-side of the "Remember The Time" 7-inch single at (3:33) as the label states, but I'm not familiar enough with the various mixes to know whether this is the Clivilles & Cole Radio Mix or an edit of the Underground Club Mix. (The label claims it is "previously unreleased"). In this version you hear Michael yell "Oww!" at about (0:12) and (0:20) before he sings the first line, "I took my baby...", at (0:25). In this mix, the last word of a line is often repeated, such as "tonight" at about (0:37).

Thank you so much for checking...it sounds like it might be the radio mix, though the vox on both mixes do echo.

I found the Clivilles & Cole Radio Mix on YouTube:
http://youtu.be/ynIFpx9hCsg

Does the beginning sound like the mix on the 45? The other is a very different sounding mix so if this one sounds right to you I'm assuming it's just a case of Epic mislabeling the 7".

Thanks again, Paul C!

I read somewhere on another message board that the original LP version of Michael Jackson's "Rock with You" appeared on the early U.S. CD release of Off the Wall. This would've been during the compact disc's infancy in the early to mid-'80s when U.S. CD releases were being manufactured in Japan since no American plants were in existence at the time.

Does anyone have an early U.S. CD pressing of Michael Jackson's Off the Wall who can pass along the run time info for the original LP version of "Rock with You". I'm thinking this information should probably be noted in the database.

This is the CD I was referring to (matrix number above) -- the Japan for US
pressing. The actual run time of "Rock With You" is 3:39.

Ah, I gotcha, Aaron... When I initially read your post, I thought you were referring to an actual Japanese import release. At any rate, thanks for the timing info!
