Hey, I just found out that the US 45 version of Thriller has an official name. It's called "Remixed Short Version":

Thriller UK 12-inch

The 4:37 version found on many imports is called "Special Edit":

Thriller UK 45

The 5:11 edit on the US promo 45 was called simply "Thriller (with Rap)."

Well, "Can't Get Outta the Rain" is finally being released domestically on a regular, full-length CD today. Sony is putting out a "Special Editions" of their previous "Essential" collections, called "Essential 3.0," with a third disc containing seven or eight tracks in each set.

The Michael Jackson 3.0 does contain "Can't Get Outta the Rain," but no other real rarities.

There's a Billy Joel "Essential 3.0" coming out today, too, but there are no previously unreleased tracks on the third disc. There aren't on most of them... it's really a waste of time.

Some of the songs on some countries' versions of the CD say "7-inch edit," but I have a funny feeling they are the bogus LP edits that were done for "Essential Michael Jackson."

Michael Palmaccio, the mastering engineer on that set, told me that usually when a remaster is done, the tape is marked as the one to use on all future compilations.

The UK 3CD set is up on the UK iTunes. You can listen to the versions there.
I'm on shitty speakers here at work right now I can't tell how well things are
mastered or if they are the right mixes, but Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'
actually sounds like the real 7" mix (I hear horn/synth trailoff!).

*Took the link down since it didn't work*

Ooh... I listened to the sample (won't let you buy it from the US), and it might actually be the real deal this time. I don't hear the cut off horn on "Billie Jean is always talkin'" in this sample. I think I'll have to buy it. Thanks, Nick!

BTW, for anyone else who wants to have a listen, I could not access it through Nick's link -- I had to go to my iTunes, scroll to the bottom of the screen, and select "UK" from the "My Store" drop-down menu.

Some of the rarer edits will be nice to have on this CD set. Also, it may be
the crappy speakers I'm on, but does The Way You Make Me Feel sound like
the original album version?

It sounds like the remixed album-length version that was done for HiStory. On the original-original album version, the vocal was much lower in volume.

It was definitely the shitty speakers then haha. Can't Get Outta The Rain
doesn't have that strange distortion like the Thriller ringle and Japanese
single set. Wonder who decided it was time to get a few things right? This
could mean the 7" versions listed on other CDs could be correct this time
:).

In surfing the internet, I've seen CD 1 sold as a standalone, available now, whereas the 3 CD set isn't available until 9/22.

Has anyone pre-ordered?

Tonight, I Googled purchasing UK iTunes tracks from the U.S. I came across a chat board discussion from 3 years ago that said it can't be done. Unless someone knows a hidden trick, or someone from the UK. :)

It can be done if you know someone from the other country you're trying to
buy from. They enter all their info to sign up for the account, then once it's
created they delete their info and put in yours and it's supposed to work.

I doubt that works these days, because they have software that recognizes your IP address and can tell if your PC is in the UK or not. I've read posts on bulletin boards from UK residents complaining they can't access their own iTunes when they travel out of the country.

There's a UK download site called 7digital.com that, several months ago, let me register and download. But a couple weeks ago, I tried to buy a song, and a screen popped up that said, "Access restriction in effect," and that I had to live in the UK to buy. I tried changing my address to a UK address, but no dice. It was recognizing my IP address is not in the UK.

I also tried using a proxy server in the UK, several of them, and have so far not been able to access my account. I can log on to the site, but I can't LOGON to my account, which I need to do to purchase.

(P.S. I did manage to get on 7digital through a proxy server after typing that message, but unfortunately, they don't have "King of Pop.")

I now believe more than ever that this is likely the 45 version of "Wanna Be." On the sample, I can hear that slight EQ switch on the word "always" on "Billie Jean is always talkin'" that is present on the 45, and is NOT present on the LP edit from "Essential."

BTW, the standard one-disc edition of "King of Pop" with the red cover, which does contain "Wanna Be" in this version and is much less expensive, is available right now. You don't have to pre-order the three-disc set. The one-disc edition is simply Disc One of the three-disc set.
