Pat - I took about two years off from this project, so I could upgrade the Discogs pages for most of the Time-Life and mail-order compilation CDs. (I edited more than 1,000 pages.)

As of now, it's very much alive again. I'm currently working on the year 1999, which should be done in a few weeks. I plan to revisit 1970-1998 (in reverse chronological order), and add in the Bubbling Unders using the same numbering scheme as the Hot 100 tracks. Thanks to some contributors from this forum, I have over 6,000 new tracks to add in to my folders. It will take me some time to sort through all this - probably a full year.

After that, the goal is to attempt to do the same for 1969, 1968, and so forth. I love the late '60s, so I'm looking forward to getting through everything else!

Stay tuned...

Amazing accomplishment!

Ron, your library notes have helped so many of us locate
and purchase what we need to get the true and best sounding
45 and LP versions and edits.

Ron,

For Whitney Houston's It's Not Right It's Okay I can tell you that the TM Century radio edit you list is not the "hit version" that was played on radio in 1999.

The "hit version" is the Thunderpuss 2000 Radio Mix which got extensive airplay in New York and other markets.

From 1999 to about 2003 the "remix" sometimes was the hit version. It happens with Tamia's Stranger In My House as well as other Top 10 singles, even 2000's Amber Sexual.

Hope that helps. For reference here is the youtube video of the "hit version"

For these directories, I use Top Hits USA's files or TM Century's files to determine what to label as the "hit version".

I don't doubt that NY radio played that remix, but I can't keep track of what was played on which stations in which markets. There have been instances of different versions being played in different markets going all the way back to Amy Grant's "Baby Baby". Or Sting's "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free". Or even "The Safety Dance".

To make my life simpler, I just list what the radio-servicing company (or companies) thought the hit was.

Labeling something a "hit version" in this era is misleading. Unlike 1985 or 1991 numerous markets played numerous versions. Just because its from TM Century does not make it a hit version.

As for the Safety Dance I never heard the short version that is on every comp only the one where they spell it out. That example is out of context for the 1999-2009 period as numerous remixes got airplay. Sometimes they overtook the regular single version.

Just as an example in 1999 I Still Believe by Mariah Carey I heard the Morales Club Mix Edit. I also heard the slow version. I am just saying labeling something a "hit version" is a misnomer when applied to later 90's and early 2000's hits.

Better you leave off the labels of "hit version" from 1999 onward as many mixes/edits got airplay. Picking one over the other is a fruitless endeavor as I see it.

I respectfully disagree; I believe that there's value in having one mix, out of five or ten different mixes, that's labeled "hit". If I'm going to play the song now, 20+ years after it was popular, I'm going to reach for the version that was the "hit". And if I don't know offhand which was the most popular at the time (and that's true for just about everything after 1995 or so in these folders), I'm going to reach for what was sent to radio at the time. I've made it clear where the "hit" designation comes from, so there isn't any ambiguity.

I'm not going to cover the 2000's in these folders, so there won't be any issues with those years. I'll be revisiting 1998, 1997, and so forth, until I reach the 1960s.

Thanks again for all your work on this. I tap out in the mid 90s or so. I use
your listings mainly to know what song maybe had an edit or remix that I
didn’t know about and see if have it. A lot of times Discogs does not list
songs on comps or whatever that are edits or remixes, usually it’s just the
song length. When I rip my CDs that info doesn’t always come over either.
So I sometimes use your lists to check to see what I have for any particular
song.

I was out of radio by 1999, but in the bar I was working in
then, I seem to recall spinning the Thunderpuss edit. I was
just over on Discogs and came across this 1 track promo CD
single which mentions that this is the version that's
calling out and working for Top 40 Mainstream.

The labeling of a version as a "hit" is subjective in 1999 and subsequent years to your interpretation. It is a lot easier in 1986, 1976, 1966 and 1956 I give you that.

There are almost always 2 versions which got extensive airplay at times even in 1995. Missing by ETBG is a perfect example. I heard the slow version off the LP and the Todd Terry Mix Edit. They are both the "hit" version but the one that garnered airplay and almost dethroned Mariah and Boyz II Men was the Todd Terry Remix Edit, not the slow version.

I'm trying to say that while your opinion is nice to have and might be rational, labeling something a "hit version" compounds a greater problem when other versions also got airplay. If I applied your logic then Old Town Road without Billie Ray Cyrus would be the hit version because it was put out to radio. It went to #1 for one week and was serviced to radio. Then the remix came and was on top of Billboard another 18 weeks. Ron, both are the "hit version" but the Billie Ray Cyrus is the one that was way more popular on the radio.

It also discounts that radio was sent the remix radio edits which got played often from 1999 on. We agree to disagree.

Leaving the "hit version" out of the tags is a better option is all I am saying and one you should consider at least for 1999.

I never heard the radio edit or LP version of the song back then. If radio had a shinny new remix to play they did. Especially for Mariah and Whitney who were super-huge stars at that time.

Much of this depends on where you were living. A large city like NYC with a big dance/club scene would likely go with a dance
mix vs smaller cities where a more pop mix would go over better.

I was music director for a CHR in 1999, and I couldn't tell you what versions of what songs we played almost 25 years later.
Sometimes we'd alternate or daypart different versions too.

You should play both versions and that way the song doesn't
burn out as quick.

I remember listening to "The Howard Stern Show" at the time
"It's Not Right" was a hit and he sent an intern out to buy
the cd because he liked the track. When he played it on the
show he was all "What the hell is this?!" because he was
used to hearing the Thunderpuss edit on the radio. Cue the
mini tirade about record company ridiculousness...

Added links for 1969, 1998, and 1999 in the original post.

Enjoy!
