No problem! Her music is mastered unusually loud.

You can tell I've been in "Madonna singles research" mode lately. I have the import CD single of "Borderline" and noticed the timings of the two "Borderline" tracks didn't even remotely match up with the times listed on the CD booklet. (And I don't have the actual vinyl 12" to make comparisons.) So I did some research and found this post.
elcoleccianista writes:
<With that 1995 reissued catalog, I remember thinking "who was in charge of this project??", for example the infamous "Borderline" CD, where its contents are not faithful to the original european 12" single. It had listed the correct tracks, but upon playing, surprise...
1. Borderline · U.S. Remix . [plays Album version]
2. Borderline · Dub Remix · [plays New Mix AKA US Remix]
It did not have the "gem" of the 12" single which was the dub, so I kept the vinyl and sold the CD.>
So if I understand correctly, this import CD single DOES have the main 12" version (the "US remix" 6:54) but it's on Track 2 instead of where it's listed (on Track 1). And the "dub remix" isn't on here at all. Are both these statements correct?
Also, is the "dub remix" on any other CD? And is it mostly just instrumental (with perhaps a few background vocals added in)? It seems that's what dub mixes usually are, so I'm just guessing here.

I don't think there is a dub remix, if I recall correctly.

So what was the 2nd version of "Borderline" that appeared on the original 12" vinyl single (where apparently it was labeled "dub remix")? Also - elcoleccianista says that "dub remix" was a "gem", so once again, I'm confused!

I used to have a 12" single with Borderline on one side and Lucky Star on the other--both labeled New Mix. Discogs lists a US promo that has the "Instrumental" on side B. Also, a UK 12" lists the "Dub Mix," so maybe that's where the gem is.

Has anyone ever seen this promo for Burning Up/Holiday from Mexico? They're both 2 edits I've
never seen anywhere else.
Side A - Ardiendo (Burning Up) 3:00
Side B - Dia De Fiesta (Holiday) 3:03
Here's where I found the info. (Thanks to Brian for pointing out this site to me a while back!)

I just got the 2001 remaster of Madonna's "True Blue" album for the 2 bonus cuts on the CD - the 12" mixes of "True Blue" and "La Isla Bonita". I really like these versions a lot. But too bad the CD didn't include - as other bonus cuts - what was on the European CD singles of these 2 songs (the instrumental of 'La Isla' and the 'remix/edit' of 'True Blue')

Edison, the "True Blue" remix/edit is not available on the "True Blue" German reissue CD single(consistent with their original 12" vynil track listing). The only 12" single to feature this version was the USA pressing. To my knowledge, it is only available on CD on "Radio 1 25th Birthday", a UK 2 CD set. But I'm pretty sure it was mastered from vinyl, given the nature of its sound. As for the "Isla" instrumental, besides the German CD single, as far as I recall, you can only find the full version on this Japan release (has been reissued twice so far), http://www.discogs.com/Madonna-La-Isla-Bonita-Super-Mix/rele ase/688493. There was no "Isla" Japan 3" originally issued in 1987, only vinyl. The reissue CD single included on this release http://www.discogs.com/Madonna-CD-Single-Collection/release/ 1561956, has an early fade of that version, consistent with 7" releases which featured it as the B side.

I've revised the Madonna 45 Versions on CD list, as she has just logged her I don't know which Top 40 hit.
From Billboard:
Quote:
Just outside the top 10, Madonna roars onto the Hot 100 at No. 13 with "Give Me All Your Luvin'," featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. The first single from Madonna's 12th studio album, "MDNA," due March 26, blasts onto Digital Songs at No. 7 (115,000) and Radio Songs at No. 28 (44 million).
Like Clarkson, Her Madgesty enjoyed a Super Bowl spotlight, having performed "Luvin'," along with portions of her past smashes, at the big game's halftime festivities. The track also received special attention from Clear Channel Media and Entertainment's more than 50 monitored pop stations, which played it at the top of every hour from Friday at 9 a.m. ET until kickoff Sunday night.
"Luvin' " marks Madonna's 56th Hot 100 appearance, tying her with Dionne Warwick for the second-most visits among women. Only the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin (73 entries), outdistances the Queen of Pop and Warwick in the category.
The No. 13 Hot 100 entrance of "Luvin' " ties 1992's "Erotica" for Madonna's fourth-highest. She arrived at loftier ranks only with "Ray of Light" (No. 5, 1998), "You'll See" (No. 8, 1995) and "Frozen" (No. 8, 1998). |

You mean the one who flipped off the worldwide Super Bowl audience?
No wonder I stopped following music in about 1997.

Well, the old slag has scored her 38th top ten on the Hot 100, finally matching Elvis. Barely... Billboard decided to allow Whitney Houston's catalog songs on the Hot 100 since they were getting airplay, so "I Will Always Love You' charts at #7 on the Hot 100. If Whitney hadn't died, "Give Me All Your Luvin'" would have been #9.
(By the way, anyone who wants to download the song in MP3 format, us.7Digital.com (the US version of British the 7Digital site) has it in 320kb, the only website that does, I think.)

Better late than never EdisonLite! The "dub remix"
released on commercial 12" singles in several countries
outside the US is just that, an instrumental version with
some vocals. In the US, that version was only released on
the promo 12" single that Aaron mentions, and labeled
"instrumental". To date its format availability remains
the same. It should have been on that european CD single
as those 1995 reissues were supposed to replicate the
original German vinyl track listing and artwork, but as
with most Madonna
reissue projects, not much dedication was devoted.

Chuck is just sure he saw a US 7" vinyl promo for
"Spotlight" back in the day. Any of our DJs have any
recollection of there being a 45 promo for this song? I
can't find any reference to one online, not a US pressing.

Brian, I know that Chuck is one of our trusted T4MOC "experts",
through his work with Mediabase. And anything is possible. But 26
years later, the mind can sometimes play tricks! I can only speak for
what we got into our station, back in late 1987. We never got in either a
7" promo, a 12" promo, or a promo CD single for "Spotlight." And we
both added and charted it to our Top 30 survey, for 10 weeks, from
12/87 to 2/88. The source we used on-air was the 7-track promo CD,
# PRO-CD-2892, "You Can Dance (Single Edits Of Album Remixes)". FYI,
we always received excellent promo vinyl/CD service from Sire/WB. Us
not getting serviced with a vinyl source for "Spotlight", if one did ever
exist, would've been highly unlikely.
Like Michael Jackson, Madonna items have long been both so collectible
and so well-documented. Brian, I know you are a huge fan of hers.
Given just how much discography documentation, for any/all releases,
exist for such superstar acts on the 'Net, and the fact that no promo
vinyl single info currently shows up for it, makes me quite skeptical. I
also happened to be paying particularly close attention to such things
at the time, as promo CD singles were soon to overtake promo vinyl as
most Top 40 radio station's "music source of choice."

What Brian is referring to is this. Back in 1993, while record shopping at a place near Fenway Park, I could've sworn I saw a US Spotlight promo 45 - different numbering system (a pro- prefix akin to the promo 45 for Sam Kinison's Wild Thing which also had no commercial counterpart). I didn't pick it up unfortunately (kicking myself for that). I've never seen it in reference books either - that and this was 20 years ago does make me wonder...

For years and years, I swore up and down I saw a two-
track cassingle for "What It Feels Like for a Girl" at
the Tower Records in Glendale, CA, but having never run
across another one online anywhere, I now think my memory
is playing tricks on me...
Related amusing story: For years I told the story that
when Diana Ross gave Lil Kim the "boob jiggle" at the
music awards show, she laughed and said, "Whoo, girl!" I
honestly remembered that happening. Last year I saw the
clip on YouTube... she NEVER said, "Whoo, girl!" She
just giggled her boob. But if you had asked me to swear
in a court of law that Diana Ross had said, "Whoo, girl!"
at that moment, I would have done it.

Chuck, you just gave me a new detail to work with here. The 1988 Sam
Kinison "Wild Thing" promo-only 45. Guess what? Along with everything
else I saved, I also happen to have a 45 box, filled with many non-
charting comedy/novelty singles that we got in/I picked up over the years.
That "Wild Thing" promo is right next to me. Listed (3:48) (Edit) on one
side, listed (4:28) (LP Version) on the other side. This 45 does have a
special promo stock #: PRO-S-3396. I just checked my Goldmine
American 45s 1948-1991 book. And it only shows *one* Madonna promo
45 with a "PRO-S" prefix - her 1st 45 release, "Physical Attraction" (PRO-
S-2023), which I was lucky enough to grab out of the "unknown stiffs,
heading for the trash bin" back in '83.
Still no luck finding documentation for a "Spotlight" promo 45, but the
Goldmine book does happen to list a 1987 promo 12" single: PRO-A-
2905. Here are its stated contents:
Where's The Party (Extended Remix) (7:31)
Where's The Party (Dub) (6:22)
Spotlight (Extended Remix) (6:24)
Spotlight (Dub) (6:43)
Clearly, this had to have been a 12" single, with 13 minutes of audio +
included on each side. In fact, if I go digging for a while, I may have the
above 12" single. We obviously wouldn't have used its contents on-air
(too long), but that also would've meant the station had no use for it! :)
I'm thinking the PRO-A-3396 Sam Kinison # might provide a bit of a
"PRO-A ballpark benchmark #", however. That 45 was released fairly near
when Sire would've issued "Spotlight", if Chuck did, in fact, see it back
then. My experience is that these "special numbering series" by labels
were far from sequentially based. But if it did ever come out, I suspect it
might be between 3296 and 3496, since Kinison was #3396.
Brian and Chuck, that is now your mission - should either of you choose
to accept it!!!!!

listed times for that 12" (PRO-A-2-2905):
Where's The Party (extended remix) 7:11
Where's The Party (Dub) 6:22
Spotlight (Extended Remix) 6:34
Spotlight (Dub) 4:49
obviously actual timings may be different...

does anyone know how the "like a prayer 7" version w/fade" was edited for
radio? i just got the 3" cd single and i'm sure radio stations didn't play a 5+
minute song (especially since it was played on every station every five
minutes!!). it's definitely the correct mix that i remember hearing (finally!)
but i feel like there were some edits....anybody remember?
