Welcome aboard! The 7" Version With Fade, as Brian notes on page 1
of this thread, is just an early fade of the 3" CD single version you just
acquired. It fades about 20 seconds sooner.

i should have clarified, i'm sorry....i already have the "7" version w/fade" from
the german 3" cd single. it runs 5:06 (20 seconds shorter than the us full 7"
version"). but even at 5:06 i'm sure this was too long for radio. i was just
wondering if anyone remembered if there were any edits. or perhaps a dj
promo?

minute song (especially since it was played on every
station every five
minutes!!).

My promo single, Sire 7-27539-DJ-A has a 7" version with
fade on one side (listed time 5:06), and a 7" remix/edit
on the other (listed time 5:41).

I don't remember seeing a shorter version of this...5
minutes wasn't overly long in 1989, and a superstar act
like Madonna could get away with it, much as Elton John
did in the mid-ish 70s.

Where I was working at the time we played both versions
interchangeably.

The album version of "Ray Of Light" ran 5:19. The radio
edit ran 4:34 and is readily available.

It's called the Q-Sound edit, and it sounds like an
early fade from 4:20-4:30.

Is that correct, Brian and Aaron?

"die another day" is actually a slight remix. can anyone tell what the
differences are? i always thought the radio edit was just a simple edit....?

The radio edit removes her laugh and spoken "I need to lay down" vocal before the final chorus.

Yes. The best mastering can be found on the Japanese/Australian EP called "True Blue - Super Club Mix" and the US/UK/Japan CD Video release of "Papa Don't Preach" from 1988/1989. This was a 5" CD/Laserdisc hybrid and her only entry in the series.

It's also on a 1995 German reissue maxi CD for "Papa Don't Preach", but the sound quality is inferior on most of the releases in that series and is a bit murkier here than on the other two which are mastered virtually identical to the album version on the 1986 True Blue album release. Hope this made sense and was helpful. =)

Dress You Up – 45 was the "Like a Virgin" LP version. A remix/edit backed the
promo 45, which has never been issued on CD, but it can be recreated from
the extended remix.

Anyone know the edit points in recreating it? Just heard this version this
morning on Casey's Top 40.

The "Remix Edit" can't be
recreated by editing the 12" remix. The beginning and
ending are both different.

You can get the beginning from the Casual Instrumental
Mix, which is on CD; however, I do seem to recall that
the ending is different.

Crazy for You – The exact 45 version did not appear on CD until
the Madonna collection "Something to Remember" was issued. It runs about
4:01, the same mix as the "Vision Quest" soundtrack version, but fading some
ten seconds earlier. The Japanese "CD Single Collection" uses the full 4:10
soundtrack version.

Just noticed that the digital album has the edited version of the song instead
of the 4:01 version mentioned above. Why would they change it? I have the
actual CD and it runs the true 4:01.

So the US 3" CD single does include the remix with guitar
by Prince?

What Madonna single are you referencing?

I think LunarLaugh is referring to "Like A Prayer". I believe it was her first commercially released CD Single in the US (released in the 3" CD format that the labels were experimenting with at the time) and the Wikipedia entry for the song mentions Prince's involvement with the song.
