I checked the commercial 45 of "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" today (Epic 03368), and I verified that it is (3:33). Contrary to what it says in Top 40 Music On CD, commercial copies run (3:33) and not (4:23).
For those of you who wish to have this version on CD, it's one simple edit of the 4:23 version. The section from 3:12 to 3:58 is edited out, with the edit point right before the word "make" in both places. If you're using the version from "At Worst: The Best Of Culture Club" you'll also have to cut off the dialog at the beginning and pitch it up 1.3% to match the 45. Happy splicing!

aaron.....i have the commercial 45 released in 1982 on epic 03368 and it contains the 4:23 version and NOT the 3:33 version.....i've compared it to the version on the cd "at worst the best of culture club" and it is identical........does your copy have etched into the vinyl any writing stating it is an edit version........mine does not........i've had a discussion with the moderator regarding this same kind of issue with the 45 "hysteria" by def leppard.......i conclude that the cd version and the 45 version are the same.......

Good question, edtop40. The label says Epic 03368, but I'm not sure about the etching on the vinyl. I listened to it at a friend's house, so the 45 isn't mine. I will check it again the next time I'm over there. I did look on the label to see if there was any indication of "promo" or "demonstration-not for sale." I did not see anything. But this may very well be a DJ copy of the 45.

aaronk:
If the label on your friend's 45 copy is white, then it's a pretty good bet that he has a DJ issue.

Nope, it's the standard dark blue Epic label, and it has a different song on the b-side (not just the same song repeated like many DJ 45s).

I wanted to revive this thread, because I am still under the belief that two commercial 45s exist. The (3:33) edit that my friend has is NOT a promo 45. Does anyone else have the (3:33) edit on a commercial copy?
It wouldn't surprise me, given that Tom Petty was recently discovered having two commercial releases for "Don't Come Around Here..." Another example on the Epic label is Teena Marie's "Lovergirl" which was released commercially in two different MIXES, but with no indication on the label.

Ed:
When you say your commercial 45 of "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" is identical to the version on Boy George & Culture Club's At Worst: The Best of CD, does this mean your 45 contains the "popularity breeds contempt" spoken intro?

Thanks to Jim for helping out on this one, here's the info on the 3:10 and 2:50 edits.
- On the 3:10 edit, you simply take the 3:33 edit (mentioned above), but NOT pitched up, and cut from (0:19) to where the two synth/drum hits are.
- On the 2:50 edit, you can start with either the 3:33 or 3:10 edit (not pitched up) and chop off the intro completely (starts with the two synth/drum hits).

My 45 of that states a running time of 3:59. Does the other "mix" have the same timing?

Hmmm... there's another whole thread on the board about it. I'll try bringing it to the top.

CULTURE CLUB / Do You Really Want To Hurt Mec
My stock US commercial 45 has the actual runnning time (4:20).
This song on the vinyl LP "Kissing To Be Clever" has (4:21) but my stock LP is the Japanese issue.
I can't get out of my head though the difference of the actual running time between 45 and LP is mere 1 second.
I can make out clearly "the bass drum sound like the heartbeats" on the LP track.
However I can not do it on the 45 that is removed it or faded.
Please make a judgement about this song ,the LP&45 version or length?

That's interesting. I've never heard a version of this song where the "heartbeat" bass drum was missing at the end. You might be onto something there!

Bump!!!
So in other words Aaron, the version you describe cuts out the weird instrumental refrain before the final chorus? I always thought that was a custom edit. I made my own of that song that duplicates it, but I never knew there was an ACTUAL record of this version.
Accompanying email is coming.
(LOL)

The "heartbeat" bass drum you refer to is bleed-through from the click track (metronome) on this song. All the Culture Club hits except "Church Of The Poison Mind" use a click track or a programmed rhythm section.
Most commonly, you'll hear bleed-through from someone's headphones into a microphone. There was a down-tempo Christina Aguilera hit a few years back that had the same issue throughout the song, not just at the tail end of the fade.

I'm glad this has been bumped back up, because we never determined if all 45 versions are missing the heartbeat/click track at the end.
Jody, yes, my friend has a commercial 45 (he calls it a "human copy" as opposed to a "DJ copy") that removes the "weird" instrumental section. Editing instructions are above in the first post of the thread.

Abagon just sent me a dub of his 45, and they faded the ending rather than leaving it at full volume. If I crank up the volume on the 45 dub, I can still hear the click track/heartbeat, but it's definitely faded lower than the CD versions I have. Thanks for sending the dub, abagon!

Now there was (what I assume was a custom edit, but now I'm not so sure...lol) a version that CKOC in Hamilton, Ontario played in 1983. This edit took the three "bass synth" notes that are found on the "Dub" version on the flipside of my stock 45. Then it goes into the two synth notes after the accapella. The remaining part of the song is akin to the LP version.
