Just days ago Mike Callahan, the moderator of the BSN site, announced his chat board will close on the last day of the year (12/31/2024). A tough decision that several music collectors and BSN members predicted.

I wanted to make sure everyone on this board was aware. On a side note, there is a daily blog music collector Kent Kotal has been running for two decades now that caters to the music of the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.

Forgotten Hits recently wrote a piece on the incredible music collection assembled over the years by Joel Whitburn. The story can be read here:

https://forgottenhits60s.blogspot.com/2024/10/the-joel-whitb urn-collection.html

Please read the story if you have not already. In just over a week it will be Joel's 85th birthday.

I apologize for asking about this, I feel incredibly ignorant for not already knowing:

What is the "BSN Site?"

BSN stands for Both Sides Now. It's a discography and chat
board where people discuss mainly stereo oldies. It's been
around for many years, even longer than this website.

Just FYI, it appears that the main site with the discographies will be staying, it's just the chat board that is going away for now.

Many of us BSN regulars have moved on over to a new Facebook group:

While I can appreciate his appeal to save the Whitburn collection as a whole, I can say with nearly 100% certainty Penske Media Corporation will not be interested. How do I know? Penske is the parent company of Luminate and Broadcast Data Systems. BDS closed in 2022, and the Penske/Luminate corporate heads instructed BDS to throw their entire music library of over 150,000 CDs straight into a dumpster. Thankfully, a longtime BDS employee didn't allow that to happen, and I'm the guy who bought it.

Thank you for saving them Aaron; now I buy them from you
(LOL).

I bet a majority of promo cds probably hit the dumpster
bins due to not understanding first sale doctrine/legal
disclosure on disc and not realizing there still is
modest interest with limited supply. There's about 3-5
cats who sell promos cds on Ebay and Discogs after some
of the real valuable ones get sold. There's always a
high-end market for certain ones like the ones involving
Teddy Riley.

I just recently discovered the promo cd single of After's
"How do you tell the one" and that's the only place
you'll find the song without a cross-fade from the prior
song on the LP. That kind of stuff is all that's left for
me to collect basically.

Thanks again Aaron for allowing items to get back in the
hands of those who appreciate them. I love getting the
items that went to radio and even have a few "radio play
copies" that I bought from NYC DJ Felix Hernandez.

Kudos to you Aaron for saving that collection, must have taken more than a few trips to get them all home!

Wasn't aware promo CDs were still being produced, I'd assumed they'd been replaced by downloads long ago.
