Tragic news. His restorations of single versions that were
still not available digitally or on CD were virtually
indistinguishable from an actual digital source. Very
friendly guy to chat with.

I'll add my condolences, and I'd like to suggest that we do another Zoom in the next few months to reminisce and
just chat overall.

I was saddened to hear of his passing. We spoke once on the phone and he was so full of life and eager to help anyone with their collections at any time obtain a dub of those rare 45's.

We joked about his love for music and mine and what started us down our path.

The last thing he shared with me was a hard to find airplay hit, John Gary's Cold which is not on CD.

A generous man who passed way too soon...

Yes, I agree we should do another zoom meeting - this one about Mark. I
had just written the following to a couple fellow members a couple days
ago:

Mark's passing has hurt me in a deep way I can't even describe. I was trying
to think of something to do. We can't have a memorial service because we
all live in different parts of the country (and world) ... BUT I was thinking it
would be nice to have a Zoom call, "A Celebration of the Life of Mark
Matthews", where anyone from the Pat Downey board could join if they
wish, and we could each share our memories of Mark - whether funny
memories, thoughtful things, how he impacted our lives - just a positive
sharing of stories that probably very few of us even know about.

***
Who here would be interested in participating? Can anyone set up a group
Zoom meeting? And also, when do you think we should do this? It's
probably too close to Christmas to do it in December, so maybe early
January??

Count me in on the Zoom memorial. Mark's knowledge and
mastering/mixing skills will be missed.

I have a paid Google Meet account, which allows up to 100 participants with no time limit. I'm happy to set it up once we've landed on a date and time.

Thanks for this, Aaron. I agree that sometime in January would be best. Count me in for sure!

R.I.P., Mark ... I wish I had more to add. As I shared privately, I didn't have an abundance of interaction with him, but his kindness, generosity and intentional
positivity were obvious. Thinking about his loved ones and friends during your time of grieving.

Hey, all... My apologies with the late reply to this thread. I, too, share in the shock and sadness over Mark Matthews' rather unexpected passing recently. A couple of years ago, I received a courtesy phone call from an individual who simply wanted to verify some information regarding a recent order I had placed with Eric Records online. It wasn't until several minutes into the conversation that I discovered I was actually talking to Mr. Mark Mathews himself! He was every bit the class act he had always been during our prior email conversations that we used to regularly engage in. I have always been a big fan of Mark's stellar remastering work, especially when he would successfully unearth a long lost master tape containing a hard-to-find single version or mix previously unreleased on CD. He was always very gracious about sharing the fruits of his labor with fellow music collectors, and I will always be very highly appreciative and grateful to him for his valuable contributions to our music libraries and community. That said, I am sorry for not having been in contact with him more often in recent years. Mark will surely be missed. (By the way, does anyone have any updates regarding the circumstances surrounding his passing?)

Meanwhile, I have also experienced a death of a close relative within my own family over the past week. Again, this was a situation in which this family member and I had drifted apart over the past couple of years. Now I am highly remorseful that I wasn't more proactive in reaching out.

This is all making me open my eyes to the sobering fact that, due to extenuating personal reasons, I have been largely absent from the Pat Downey chat board forum for approximately nine years now... which is absolutely stunning to me! I am realizing that nobody is guaranteed a long life -- let alone tomorrow -- and that life is too short to continue living it so reclusively. In the spirit of the Christmas season and beyond, I've decided that it's long past time for me to "come out of the shadows" and start reconnecting and interacting again with good friends from yesteryear. With that said, I have every intention of returning to the message board shortly after the holidays and becoming a regular database contributor once again. During my extensive absence, I've been continuing to absorb myself in collecting Top 40 music (and even expanding my library to now include Billboard Hot 100 hits from 1958-1991) whenever time permits and have amassed pages and pages of typewritten notes along the way. I only hope that I don't start driving poor Pat crazy again with my obsession over minute details and making him wish that I would go back into retirement! LOL :-)

By the way, I am 1,000% in favor of the idea of organizing a group video call among the Downey chat board community to honor Mark Mathews and perhaps even other members we've lost along the way (Jim Abbott immediately comes to mind) and/or discussing anything else of general interest related to Top 40 music, CD releases, music charts, etc. I would love the opportunity to reconnect with all the legendary longtime veterans here and also meet and interact with newer members. Please keep me in the loop, Aaron, whenever you are able to schedule this session, and count me in!

Todd,

It is great to see a long lost longtime member of the forum
return, albeit due to sad circumstances not only with
Mark's sudden passing but your own personal family member.
We eagerly await your return although many of your threads
that you started years ago often come up for discussion so
we look forward to your return and your contributions.

Merry Christmas!

Todd, great to see you back on the board! I always wondered where you went all these years.

It's my understanding that Mark's passing was very sudden and occurred during his sleep. Totally unexpected. However, someone posted that his
father died of a massive heart attack at age 54, so there may have been some hereditary factors at play. A huge loss to us and the music collecting
community as a whole.

I've lost a lot of family and friends the past few years and it's given me a greater appreciation for life in general.

Count me in on the get together!
The stories shared will be a wonderful way to honor his
memory!
A dear friend reminded me a few months back after someone
we both knew had passed:
We're at the age where we go to more funerals than
weddings!
Sad but true.
But we honored their memory and it does make a difference
in our hearts and memories.

I'd like to suggest either of the next 2 weekends for the video call about Mark
Mathews - Jan 13 or 14, Jan 20 or 21. Do people prefer Saturdays or Sundays?
And which weekend? Of course, this also depends on Aaron K's schedule as
he'd be setting up the Google Meet call. (Thanks Aaron!)

Saturday would have to be earlier in the day for me (around lunch time). Both of those Sundays would have to be later in the day (afternoon Central time).

Weekends work best for me. Prefer Saturday to Sunday, but either way, I'll make the time for it.

The weekend of Jan 20-21 works better for me, as Jan 13-14
is a holiday weekend in the US and I might be going out of
town.

I'd probably prefer afternoon to early in the day, but I
could make either.

Based on PMs I got and comments here, it seems like the most overlap is for
Sunday afternoon on Jan 21st. How about if we do 12 pm PST / 3 pm EST?

What about MLK Day, Monday 1/15, in the evening? Sunday 1/21 is my son's birthday, and we are likely going to be doing something with the family that afternoon. I wasn't paying attention to the date when I posted earlier.

I could probably do it on the evening of MLK day.
