The version of "What's Up" that was serviced to radio is called "Remix," and it's definitely different than the album version. My copy on TM's library runs 4:49, and is easily distinguishable by an extra drum hit just before the electric guitar. (On the album version, the electric guitar starts before the first drum hit.)
Which version is on the cassette single? The database currently contains no notes about this song, and all CDs listed have no notation.

One more note, my station played in fairly heavy rotation a dance version of "What's Up" in the spring/summer of 1994. The artist was credited as DJ Miko, although the lead vocalist sounded exactly like the lead singer from 4 Non Blondes. It might have even been her doing the vocals. Anyone else recall hearing this version?

Aaron, a little more than a year after the Linda Perry-vocaled 4 Non Blondes hit version, the DJ Miko version (with the UK's Louise Gard on vocals) debuted in its own right on the Hot 100, where, despite peaking at only #58, it remained on the Hot 100 for the then-maximum 20 weeks. I also own a German import "Dance Versions" CD single featuring 3 different versions of the song. I never did hear this on any of my local Top 40 stations in 1994, however. I do also have a promo CD single for the 4 Non Blondes version of "What's Up", and here are the details for that one:
-4 Non Blondes-"What's Up" (PRCD 4933)
1-Remix (listed 4:51; actual 4:50)
2-LP Version (listed 4:51; actual 4:55)
3-Piano Version (listed & actual 4:09)

The DJ Miko version was definitely the bigger hit in Boston...Kiss 108 really pounded that one. Don't think I heard the 4 Non Blondes one more than a handful of times during its chart run, even though that's the only one you ever hear today.
The station I was at was an AC at the time and didn't play either version as currents (though we did play both as golds when we transitioned to CHR a year or so later).

My local top 40 played the heck out of both versions, which is why I always thought this was a bigger hit. The 4 Non Blondes version actually only went to #14 on the Hot 100 and #15 on the R&R CHR chart.

To answer the question in Aaron's initial post, cassette single copies of 4 Non Blondes' "What Up?" have an actual run time of 4:55 (there is no printed time on the cassette label). Thanks goes out to Edtop40 for providing the preceding information!

Aaron your not mistaken the DJ Miko version was huge in NY. The dance mix was the bigger hit on the radio by far. Much bigger than the slow version.
However while assembling 1994 I can't find Whitburn's 3:46 time on any US promo.
The version I remember happens to be the 4:13 on NOW 1994 in the UK. Paul Haney do you happen to know where Whitburn got the 3:46 from? The 7 inch isnt listed on discogs, the CD singles dont have anything remotely close to 3:46 on them. Any help from anyone would be appreciated.

That post was referring to the 4 Non Blondes version, not
the DJ Miko version (I edited my post to make that
clearer).

My college radio station used a promo import (specifically the NOW UK series or promo CD from the UK).
There were also several choices off the maxi single.

I'm not sure the 3:46 that Paul references on the cassette was ever the "hit version."
Just for reference even I was buying imports from by Brooklyn cd shoppes in 1994, so it doesn't surprise me that the 4:14 is the version I heard on the radio and at college....
PS I reference the DJ Miko version, which should have its own thread lol.

So are you saying your local Top 40 station played the cassette in 1994 Paul?
From what it sounds like the 4:14 can't be used to recreate the 3:46 they sound like completely different mixes, especially on the opening.
I get cassette was in its peak, but without a CD promo to match I still heard the 4:14 on radio in NY.
BTW this reminds me of the Soul II Soul However Do You Want Me Song. You can properly listen to the single version on the CD promo (called the Acapella intro) and that's what is the released commercial version but we all heard the 3:48 overseas version pretty much in rotation in 1989. Same with Tainted Love. You may have heard the 2:42 but I've always heard the 4 minute that goes into Where Did Our Love Go on the promo.

FYI, The hit radio version of the the DJ Miko dance version
that became wildly popular back in '94 can be found on the
Promo Only Radio Series (Mainstream) May '94 disc. It's
track 18 with duration of 3:48.

I suppose it's possible that the local station was playing the (4:14) version, but I
seem to recollect that what they played pretty much matched what was on the
cassette single (which I also bought at the time for my own collection).

Rick, can you describe how the intro and ending sound on the Promo Only disc? I didn't start subscribing until '96, although I did pick up a few issues secondhand issued prior to the start of my subscription.
The 4:14 radio edit has a cold intro and fade out ending, while the music video has a synth intro and cold ending.
