With the resounding success of the Pop Annual and the
fire sale to clear out the old books in stock, RR cash
flow should be looking good! So which book should Paul
work on next?
The contenders:
Top R&B Singles (last in 2016) - not sure about the
demand for this
Top Country Singles (last in 2017) - more popular than
the R&B genre
Top Pop Albums (last in 2016) - probably the most
desirable but I need a forklift for that version already.
Looks like a major update effort!!
Submitted for your consideration:
Publishing the weekly "charts" created by Steve Sullivan
for the Pop Memories projects - would definitely be
interesting.
Music Vendor Singles Charts 1954-1963 - not sure about
the demand but these charts are so rare and need to be
shared with the music chart research community. Would add
to Joel's legacy and might be the last opportunity to
share these treasures! Historically priceless.
Cash Box Charts, the 1950s and 1990s - not really rare
and available online.
So what does everybody think?

Adult Contemporary could use an update as
well. Last one went to 2006.

That is something I would definitely buy.
I would also like to see Pop Annuals published for Pop
Memories, The Comparison Book, and The Whitburn Book of
Top Ten Hits, which are my three favorite books you've
ever published.

My Record Research Top 13 wish list would be:
--a revised super deluxe singles comparison book, featuring BB, CB, RW/MV, + adding Radio & Records + Gavin. And running
from 1952-2009
--I too would love a Music Vendor Singles Charts book 1954-1963, and if some charts are too poor in quality I'd be OK with
just typing up those few (though with all the technology out there these days, there could be/should be some way to make a
poor quality chart look better)
--and a Cash Box Singles Charts The 1950s
--I'd also go for a revised Pop Albums book, and if necessary, split into two books for two time periods, like the latest
pop singles books; I personally don't need the track listings, as I always go to the web for that info
--I too would go for the Pop Memories weekly charts by Steve Sullivan, that'd be fab kool !!
--probably not doable, but I'd go for a comparison book during the time period of the separate dj-jukebox-sales charts for
BB-CB-MV/RW, and throw in the main pop chart of each, so you could have up to 12 chart peaks for each record during that
limited time period
--maybe even produce a book by record/artist of the Honor Roll Of Hits charts 1945-1963 [or include this data in one of the
comparison books I show above] [noting the DVD of the weekly charts is already available]
--yeah, I'd go for a revised Adult Contemporary
--a revised Christmas In The Charts
--a revised BB Country Singles
--BB Country Albums
--BB Country Annual
--a Pop Annual book for the 1940s
And that's all I want for Christmas !!

An updated Billboard Country Annual would be my top
request. The first & only edition ends more than 25 years ago in
1997. If starting with 1944 like the previous edition is not viable
consider shortening the time span and the size of the book to
perhaps cover just 1990-2024?
Also - a country book compiling the Cashbox Magazine charts
would be on my ultimate wish list as well.

I think it unlikely that Country Annual will get updated. The original edition
was still being sold a few years ago so if the original print run had taken 20
years to sell out it is unlikely that another will be made. It’s a shame as it
would be a nice book.
CashBox might work actually but again that always depends on the sales of
the Record World ones as I’d suggest they would use those as a guide.
For me, I’d like them to look at updating the Album books for Country and
R&B. Most of the work is already done in that the track listings for most
would exist within the Fork Lift Truck Needed volume of Top ALbums 55-
2016. Of course the charts would need to be set up but that could be a
‘quick’ book - in the grand scheme of things.

Don’t think there is any chance for updates on the older books, i.e. Country
Annual, AC, Country Albums etc. There’s a reason they haven’t been
updated as little demand doesn’t justify Paul’s time and expense. Don’t
think any more comparison books are in the works either. Cashbox Country
probably soft demand - not sure how well the Record World Country sold.
Know there are some hardcore fans of the older books, but not in significant
numbers. There are spreadsheets out there.
I want the Music Vendor charts but forsee limited demand and production
issues. But its historical value is important. Maybe loan these issue to
American Radio History and let them scan them. That would be great also!
I’m afraid these charts will be lost in history.
Think the 1900 - 1940 “charts” would be very interesting.
Record Research is a for profit entity, let’s not lose sight of this.

I should have put that in my previous post. I'd love a
Radio & Records Pop Annual.

For contenders, Billboard Top Pop Albums but it would have to include those that Bubbled Under, like the Pop Singles book does.
My book ideas (I know some of these are impossible to do but wishful thinking on my part.)
Billboard & Cash Box YE Charts
CB Pop Albums
CB Adult Contemporary
BB Revised #1 Hits (it could include CB only #1's)
BB Revised #2 Hits
BB/CB comparison book highlighting certain artists and what chart they did better.
BB/CB book on cover versions. It can be strictly chart related or songs which the original was never released or charted or album cut.
BB book on chart statistics (artists with most charted hits, longevity, biggest leap to #1, etc.)
A book that lists all single releases that never charted.

According to my bookie, the best odds is an update of the C&W Singles
book. If that book sells well, that could possibly lead to a new C&W Annual,
but don’t hold your breathe.
C&W has done well lately on the Hot 100 so the fan base (and potential RR
customers) is looking strong.
