I know, not a Top 40 hit, but it did bubble under as a b-side. I knew only the
version from the "Shut Down Volume 2" LP, which begins with a drum beat and
vocals with no music backing. Listening to 2008 collection "U.S. Singles
Collection; The Capitol Years 1962-1965", the song begins with no drum beat,
rather a keyboard instrument that fades behind the vocals.I thought it might be
the remains of the 2009 issued stereo mix with the (gorgeous) intro, but it's
not. Checking 45s playing on YouTube, this latter version is the 45. News to
me!

Yes, David, that is correct; I had the Star-line reissue
of the "Fun Fun Fun" single when I was a kid and it had
that slightly different intro.
I *believe* that version can be recreated by editing the
a capella part from about 1:15 into the intro of the LP
version.
A person might want to attempt this if they wanted to
create a stereo version of the 45 as there was a later
released stereo mix creates=d of the LP version.

That is very interesting info. This b-side was what was played on WQAM in 1964. The station would not play the a-side because their biggest competition on the AM dial was WFUN.
Apparently, somebody at the station felt playing the big chart side of the 45 would only call attention to their enemy. Instead, they played the cover tune on the flip side.

Just an aside, according to Brian Wilson the intro on the 2009 stereo remix was arranged by none other than Leon Russell.
