Is it just an early fade, or are there edits made?

I believe the opening section is lopped off (I seem to recall the radio version not starting with it), but I don't know exactly to what degree (and
whether there are any other edits or it's just faded early on top of it).

However, they may be a mix difference as well, which means you may not be able to replicate the single from the album version.

I have this CD single. It's a different mix along with the beginning being cut
shorter. The single version has a guitar solo out in front right before Steve
start singing being one of the changes.

Funny I was just checking this last night as well. I got
as far as comparing the intros and realized the mixes were
different.
For example you can't remove the slow intro from the LP
without an overlap at the point where the single version
starts. Then the opening drum-roll on the LP has a pre-
echo but the single mix does not..the differences go on
and on so I just stopped right there.

Anybody want to send me the single version? There was a version on YT years
ago, but it taken down, that sounded radically different from the LP version,
and not exactly in a good way.

Thanks for the Mp3. The version you sent doesn't seem to be all that that
different from the LP version, and it can be recreated.

Remove the first 50 seconds from the LP version (She was only a child)

Remove the first 8 beats from the intro after the drum roll. :58 to 1:07.

You now have the single version.

The version I heard on Youtube had the second chorus and guitar solo
repeated at the end, leading to an abrupt fadeout. Also, the "haas" were
sampled throughout on certain downbeats.

It seems now there were two versions released. My question now is: Which
one was played on the radio when it was current, and why the need for a
second mix?

I have two different promos for "You Better Wait."

CSK 77580
1. Single Edit (listed 3:48; actual 3:50)
2. Album Version (listed 4:52; actual 4:50)

CSK 6276
1. Radio Edit (listed 3:34; actual 3:45)
2. Album Version (listed 4:52; actual 4:50)

To my ears, the mixes sound very similar if not identical between the Single Edit, Album Version, and Radio Edit. While the run times are close between the Single Edit and Radio Edit, the intros are edited differently (different guitar solos) and the endings are different. The Single Edit keeps the ending of the LP version, while the Radio Edit fades out during a guitar solo.

The intros of both edits are at least unique for the first half second, as you don't have the preceeding part of the LP version overlapping, but after that, I'm having a hard time distinguishing anything different. I have not, however, A/B'd the tracks from start to finish.
