i've been comparing the 45 versions of their hits and the
tracks on the 35th anniversary gold cd and they sound very
different........many of the 45's run a few seconds longer
than their cd counterparts.............and the song
"yesterday once more" sounds very different..........anyone
have any info as to if the 45 version of their hits are
available on cd?

A lot of questions you're asking are covered in Pat's book. You should consider ordering it, if you haven't already. Richard Carpenter has remixed a lot of the original Carpenter's tracks and re-recorded his piano parts. I believe the original mixes are on the A&M Carpenter's "Yesterday Once More" CD, though they're not all the 45 versions.

All the remixed tracks with newly-recorded piano are noted in Pat's book.

The source for the Carpenters original 45 versions and mixes on CD are the reissues of the original LPs on CD that were put out a while back. Yesterday Once More has some original mixes, but most are not. I actually downloaded the songs I needed (the 45 versions) from a legal download service here in Canada. It was the first time I did this and was pleased with the results...much cheaper than purchasing all the individual CDs, when all I want is the hits. You can get the original mix of "Ticket To Ride" on the CD "Offering/Ticket To Ride", albeit in its LP length!
