Anyone know where to find the 4 and a half video version (probably the
radio version as well) of this. I also have a cassette rap comp with a 5:30
version on it that has rain sound effects in the beginning. Does anyone
have a list of all the versions?

It just so happens that this genre is my area of expertise. While I'm not sure about a 4 1/2 minute video version, I can tell you for sure that the 45 version runs 3:46 (give or take a second). It is readily available on several compilations. (If you go to allmusic.com, just do a song title search, and it will list the run times on the various CDs.) Ironically, one of the compilations it appears on is "Great '70s Dance Grooves." Why they decided to put an early '80s track on that disc is beyond me.

LOL, I've seen a CD single for sale with 11 different mixes of this song...and none of them is the 45 version!

I know...found it on the net and it does suck. I jus won the 45 on ebay
just to have it...I've never seen the 45 before. What about "planet rock"
by Afrika Babmaataa & The Soul Sonic Force? What was the 45 length of
that?

The 45 version for "Planet Rock" is the one that starts with the music and runs 5:18 (also available on several CDs). There is another mix (the LP perhaps?) that starts with an acapella vocal.

I just completed my own edit of "jam on it" and I think I'm pleased with
the edits. It's a bit long for radio clocking in at 5:27 but I created some
fade versions that make it a bit shorter. This version doesn't butcher the
lyrics and keeps the Chilly B lyrics in place. Take a listen and let me know
what you think:

I just cut it down some more...now clocking in at:

Early Fade (4:16)
Fade (4:48)
Edit (4:57)

Let me know what you think. I wonder why they released the video with
such a choppy audio edit. This edit was a little more challenging than
most. To cut an 8 minute song down is tough. I feel as though the
offical 7" version really killed the song. At least it now clocks in under 5
minutes.

I'm amazed there wasn't a shorter edit for radio, but the
only promos on Discogs are the same length as the
commercial 45.

I'd think this one would be easy to chop down to 2 & 1/2 or
3 minutes, if you wanted... I'm sure the length didn't
help it get airplay in '82.

For the 45 edit of "Jam On It", most definitely pick up Sony
Special Products' Great '70s Dance Grooves (1995). I'd
done my own recreation of the 45 edit using Hip Hop
Greats
, but I ditched it in favor of Grooves because
the version on Grooves sounds so good. (The version of
Jimmy Bo Horne's "Dance Across The Floor" on Grooves is
inexcusably bad, though.)

Even though Great 70s Dance Grooves was for sale
for 99 cents, I decided to recreate the 45 version with
my stock 45 as a guide. About 5 or 6 edits to get it to
3:48 or so.

Yikes! Hacking one of the first electro classics down to a mere 2.5-3 minutes?!? Geez, sometimes I wonder if we collect music to enjoy it or destroy it??? Tsk, tsk. :-) Seriously, while I have no solid proof, I believe this is a case where the song was first released as a 12" single, and when it began to sell extremely well (new genre, after all), Tommy Boy issued it on 45 more or less as an afterthought, and thus didn't want to shave it down any further than to (5:18), even for radio. (In Billboard, it first cracked the 12"/dance chart on 05/15/82, then the r&b chart on 06/12/82, before finally hitting the "Hot 100" on 07/17/82.) While not a huge pop airplay hit, "Planet Rock" was one of those big r&b/crossover sellers a la Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" the following year (1983). And while aaronk suggests an "LP version/mix" in his post from 29 September 2007 above, there actually was no parent album for the song back in '82 - although the label did eventually release a compilation that it titled Planet Rock - The Album four years later, in 1986 (Tommy Boy 1007), which I've owned on cassette since the late '80s, and features an even longer (7:30) version of the title track...

Does anyone know where the 6:30 version on the compilation "Rapmasters
10: The Best Of Scratchin'" originally appeared? This is the one I was
referring to at the top of this thread with the rain and stormy sound effects at
the beginning. I originally said it was 5:30 but I don't have the cassette in
front of me to time it out. Here is a link to the release:

The 1984 LP Jam On Revenge shows a listed time of 6:26 for "Jam On It." My bet would be the vinyl LP and possibly your cassette.

Hi Aaron you were correct once again. I didn't even realize I had a bootleg
CDR copy from the bands website. I dusted it off and sure enough it has the
version in question. Thanks!
