In looking at my book, "Love Song" by Tesla is only listed in it's LP Version on all CDs (unless the newer editions have a 45 version listed). Was the 45 version an edit of the LP version or a different mix altogether?
Also, Todd posted in his "DJ Edit Editions" thread that "Signs" is censored on the DJ CD single, which I have. Was the 45 version not censored?

The instrumental introduction to "Love Song" on the LP version runs 1:33 while on the 45 it runs :15. Other than that they appear to be the same mix.

Aaron:
Commercial single copies of "Signs" are censored. I posted info about the promo CD single to also point out there is a discrepancy between the actual and printed run times.

I just obtained a copy of what's labeled as the "CHR Edit" of "Love Song" by Tesla. (It's on a radio promo compilation, so I don't know if this is an official name of the edit.)
As Pat pointed out, the instrumental introduction starts 15 seconds before the first vocals. This is just an edit at the point were the acoustic guitar fades out and the "electric" guitar (or whatever type of guitar it is) fades in. Also, half of the guitar solo in the middle of the song is edited out. The actual run time on this copy is (3:40). Does this match up with what you have, Pat?

Aaron, no, the promo vinyl 45 that I have has the full instrumental break and is identical to the LP version except for the introduction edit that we both have mentioned.

I just found some info on a promo CD single for "Love Song" (Geffen PROCD 3648). Although I couldn't find the run times, the tracks are:
1. CHR Edit
2. Rock Edit
It appears that the version on my radio compilation is an official edit.

Thanks, Ed! I only found that track listing online, and apparently, it must be either the wrong track list or the wrong catalog number.

Actually, Aaron, the Tesla "Love Song" promo CD single listing you saw was legit. I just acquired a copy and it contains the following track listing and actual run times:
1) CHR Edit - 3:40
2) Rock Edit - 4:04
What's odd about this is the catalog number is PRO-CD-3648 just like Ed's copy. Evidently, there are two different pressings of this promo disc that share the same catalog number. The matrix number printed along the center hub on my copy is: DIDX-005317 1.
I haven't checked to see if the Rock Edit is the same as the commercial 45 version but I'll report the results when I get a chance to do a direct comparison between the two.
Regarding "Signs" by Tesla... It's been determined that the LP version is uncensored while the 45 version is censored. That said, I'm thinking the database should contain an (LP version) comment next to each of the CD entries since they all contain the uncensored version. This would probably be helpful to database users trying to find the specific version of the song they're looking for.

Can the 'censored' version of "Signs" be recreated from the LP version?

Nope, it has different lyrics. I've always wondered how they managed to change the lyrics of a "live" recording. Could it be possible that they performed the song twice at the concert? One with and one without profanities? I've never A/B'd the LP and censored versions to see if the vocals match up in the rest of the song.

I just compared my commercial 45 of "Love Song", labeled as "Edit" on the label, to the LP version.
To recreate the 45, cut off the first 1:17 of the LP version, and add a very gentle fade-in in the first two seconds or so.
All else is the same. My commercial 45 runs 4:04.

Regarding "Signs," the database currently indicates "LP version" for all CD entries. The original LP has this song seguing together with the previous and next tracks, which is not true of other CD entries. It seems like some additional notation may need to be made.

By the way, this video on YouTube has some hilarious signs set to the Tesla song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vgf0dmzEf0

It should be noted the "Censored" version of Signs still contains the 'Fuckin up
the scenery" in the chorus. The only line that's changed is the last verse
"Made up my own fuckin' sign" to the original "Made up my own little sign".

I have a promo CD that has the CHR and Rock version. I
think the rock version was the 45 version if I'm not
mistaken. I will send it to you.

The censored version should say "Blocking up the scenery"

Since promos put both versions first on competing copies, do we think the CHR or the rock / 45 version was considered the "hit" radio version?

I wonder if Ed still has his promo CD single. I only have the disc that has the CHR Edit as the lead track, and there's no online listings for the one Ed has.
I wasn't yet working in radio when this song came out, but it seems like top 40 would've gone with the CHR Edit, regardless of which track it was on the disc.
