Here's an odd item I'm hoping someone can help shed some light...

I used to own a cassette copy of the Bruce Springsteen Born in the U.S.A. album. Though my cassette LP is long gone, I'm certain the song "Glory Days" contained a fade, but it was not like the one found on Springsteen's Greatest Hits (Columbia 67060) CD. I clearly recall listening to the cassette thinking the fade was strange because it began about one minute before the song ended; was long and drawn out; and you could actually hear the song end cold before the fade out was complete! In other words, the song ran approximately 4:14 like the 45 and CD album but contained this long fade at the end. I have never heard this faded version of "Glory Days" anywhere but on the cassette.

My question is, does anyone have a cassette or vinyl LP copy of Born in the U.S.A. who can 100% verify this strangely faded version of "Glory Days"?

Todd,
my vinyl "Born In The USA" album had the long fade you describe for your cassette. I always thought it was odd that they did this drawn-out fade only to reveal the cold ending at an extremely low volume.

I only own the CD, but I never understood why they faded it either. Even though it's not a drawn out fade like you guys are describing, you can still hear the cold ending on the CD's fade out, too.

I always assumed that the 45 contained the fade and the LP contained the full cold ending. I am listing to the "Born in the USA" LP right now and was so surprised to hear the fade out just like the 45. I know I have heard the full version (no fade) before but where??

It's possible that you heard it played in its entirety on the radio, and the station's audio compression adjusted the levels to eliminate any evidence of a gradual fade.

I remember MTV playing the video a LOT back when the song was a
hit. The video contains the full, unfaded version.

I thought for sure that I had a copy of it but you may be right Aaron. I must have just assumed that MTV played the video using what I thought was the LP version. All these years I just assumed that it was a dumb attempt on CBS to create a 45 version by fading it out. Hmmmm

So what's the verdict with this one? I still can't believe the LP and 45 are exactly the same. After all these years I never noticed it? Wikipedia says 2 versions are out there: 4:15 (album version) 5:26 (full version). I'm assuming they are talking about the demo version with the extra verse? I would think the cold ending version will be a few seconds longer than the album version (around 4:20 or so).

My question is does the cold ending LP version exist anywhere on CD or vinyl? Maybe a promo 12"?

I was able to "undo" the fadeout by using my copy from "Born In The USA." I had to use a slight amount of hiss reduction at the very end, since the volume was very low during the final few seconds. If you need a copy, let me know. It sounds great!

Hi Aaron that would be great! I still think it's crazy that this fade out version is on the album that way.
