the song "for tonight" by nancy martinez is puzzling me
i have two 45's with the same label & catalog number but with differing matrix numbers
the first 45 issued on atlantic 89371 has the "radio mix" version of the song and a matrix number of 50105 and a printed run time of 3:26
the second 45 issued on atlantic 89371 has the "new radio mix" version of the song and a matrix number of 50745 and a printed run time of 3:35...this copy comes with a picture sleeve while the first does not.....in whitburns "top pop singles" book he claims the 45 did not come with picture sleeve originally
i listed to the second 45, the new radio mix version, and the version on the 45 is identical to the version from her 1986 cd "not just the girl next door" just faded out from 3:25 to 3:35
in the database thye cd "freestyle hits" is said to contain the 45 version running 3:29
so i'm assuming the first 45 with the lower matrix number 50105 is the TRUE single version because it was issued originally...........
anyone have any input on this issue

As I remember, the lion's share of mainstream top-40 airplay was with the second version mixed by Brian Max & Sergio Munzibai.
In the mid 80's 'M & M' were a hot mixing/production team with a few club/radio crossover hits.

Ed:
I'm not 100% sure, but I think the "new radio mix" of Nancy Martinez's "For Tonight" was the version that fueled the song's popularity and eventually became the standard version. Therefore, I think I'd probably be more inclined to consider this mix to be the true 45 version.

both 45's indicate they are mixed by "m & m" so the theory may not be viable.............

Ed, Aaron is currently borrowing both of my vinyl versions, and we will hopefully soon be able to finally resolve this one for you, once and for all, my friend!

Both of Jim's copies are promo 45s, and they seem to be identical to the commercial copies that Ed has.
Atlantic 7-89371 contains the "Radio Mix" and has a printed time of (3:26). The runout groove says ST-A-50105-1 on both sides.
Also on Atlantic 7-89371 (the other copy) is the "New Radio Mix" with a printed time of (3:35). The runout groove on this copy says STA-50745-1. It comes with a picture sleeve that was probably the same one issued for the commercial copy, because the sleeve lists "Central Park Version" for the b-side, but the 45 has the "New Radio Mix" on both sides.
As Ed correctly states above, the "New Radio Mix" is the one that matches the Nancy Martinez CD, but faded early.
Given that two 45 versions exist, I'd be inclined to say that there are two true single versions, like we've seen in several other cases. For the completists, I'm sure they will want to have both. For database purposes, a comment such as "first issued 45 version" would probably work for CDs containing the "Radio Mix."
For the other CDs, I suppose "LP length" and "45 length" would work, as long as there is a comment next to the song title that explains the difference between the two 45 versions. For example:
Both DJ and commercial copies run (3:26), which is the first issued 45 and states "Radio Mix" on the label, and (3:35), which is the second issued 45 and states "New Radio Mix" on the label. The LP contains the "New Radio Mix" but runs longer than 45 copies.

whitburns books indicate that the 45 DIDN'T come originally with a picture sleeve....

Does anyone have a picture of this vinyl to put on
Discogs
(as well as create a listing)? I only ask because I only
see one listing with the "New Radio Mix" on Discogs and
that lists the "Central park version" as the B side on
the vinyl label itself. I don't see any listing at all
with "New Radio Mix" on both sides
