The lone database CD appearance of Cause & Effect's "You Think You Know Her" has a run time of 4:43. I've been wondering if a shorter edit exists for this song and my research seems to indicate there is one... The 7-track commercial maxi-CD single and promo CD single releases both list a 7” Version and 7" Edit, respectively, with a stated run time of 4:35.

If anyone has a commercial or promo single of "You Think You Know Her" who can pass along the pertinent track and run time info, it would be greatly appreciated!

The stated 4:35 edit (4:36 actual) is an edit of the original album version from here: http://www.discogs.com/Cause-Effect-Cause-Effect/release/132 270

The hit version I remember is the Promiscuous Edit which is always listed at 4:43. 4:43 is the actual time too.

Interesting that this came up on the board since C&E is my favorite band. Back when I discovered them there was no internet so it was difficult to get the details on this release.   Back in 1990 they released their commercial CD single on Exile/Nastymix records which was an independent label. A year later Zoo Entertainment picked them up. Zoo re-released the single and they did release a promo CD single which cmmmbase listed above. The tracks were exactly the same, Zoo just renamed the mixes. The "7" Remix Edit" is the same exact mix as the "Promiscuous Edit" on the Exile release. Sean Rowley remixed the Promiscuous Mix and Zoo later decided to use the editied version as their "hit version." The actual running time of the original Exile 7" Version has an actual running time of 4:40 and is an edit of the original Exile album version which has a listed running time of 5:44. When Zoo re-released their self-titled album as "Another Minute" in 1991 they replaced the album version with the Promiscuous Edit and did not specify a mix name. There was just an asterisk (*) next to the track signifying that it was a remix.

Back in 1991 I caught the tail end of the original Exile 7" Version on my local radio station twice. My guess is that they got the original exile promo and never replaced it with the Zoo Promo in 1991. Since 1991 I only hear the promiscuous edit (7" Remix Edit on Zoo) when the song is played...if it is played.

Here is a link to the original Exile release:

Thanks for the info, guys. Wow, so whether the single version has an actual run time of 4:38 or 4:40, that sure isn't much of an edit given that the album version runs only a few seconds longer at 4:43!

Actually there are 2 distinct mixes. The 4:43 "album" version is an edit of the 8:00 "promiscuous mix." The "original album version" runs at 5:44 (Exile/Nastymix release). The "7" Edit" on the Zoo release is an edit of the original album version (5:44) and sounds different. The "7" Edit" released on Zoo is the same track as the "7" Version released on the Exile label. It's confusing because of the renaming of the tracks by Zoo Entertainment. Basically in 1990 radio stations played the 4:35 mix and then replaced that mix with the 4:43 mix in 1991. The great thing about it is the single was released two times.

Ah, I see... So the "7" Remix Edit" is not only known as the "Promiscuous Edit", but it's also identical to the version appearing on the Another Minute CD (SRC/Zoo 11019 and 31019), which is the song's lone database entry. By the way, my copy of that CD also contains the "Unfaithful Mix" of "You Think You Know Her" on Track 10 with a run time of 7:16. (This is not currently noted in the database.)

Meanwhile, mainrhythm's link above indicates that the original album version appeared on Cause & Effect's self-titled CD released in 1990 on the Exile/Nastymix label. Since this was such a tiny independent record label release (the album doesn't even show up on the All Music Guide or Amazon websites!), would this CD qualify for database inclusion? (Pat would obviously have to rule on this.)

It would also be useful to obtain cassette single info for "You Think You Need Her". Perhaps our resident cassette single guru Edtop40 might be able to chime in here.

I have a copy of the commercial cassette single (SRC/Zoo 14025):

1) You Think You Know Her (listed 4:43; actual 4:35)
2) New World

I actually may have made a mistake on the run time of the "promiscuous mix." I believe it was the "deception mix" that ran 8:00. In my defense Zoo actually named the promiscuous mix the "unfaithful mix" on their release of the album but their "unfaithful mix" on the promo CD single is actually the "deception mix" on the Exile release single. It's confusing because Zoo messed up all the names. This is probably what started my hunt for all the mixes back in 1992.

I have confirmed through Ed that his commercial cassette single of Cause & Effect's "You Think You Know Her" has an actual and printed run time of 4:43. It does not state a specific version on the cassette label or cardboard sleeve, but it's identical to the version on the duo's Another Minute CD.

How can Paul Haney have a commercial cassette of this song running (4:35) and Edtop40 have the same cassette single which runs (4:43)?

This is likely the result of the cassette single being timed on two different cassette decks with very different playback speeds.

I timed my copy on 2 different decks (both of which have run other singles just fine). It's possible that a) my copy has the 7" edit as described above OR b) the tape itself runs a little faster.

Just another reason why I was never a big fan of cassette singles!

I am not sure if a cassette single was released on the Exile label back in 1990. I do have the Zoo cassette single as well and it is the Exile "promiscuous edit" (aka "7" remix edit" on Zoo).
