Reviving an old discussion regarding "I Got 5 On It" by the Luniz, it was previosuly mentioned in an old thread that the 45 version should be the cassingle version which Ed says can be found on "The Bomb" cd on Backstage Records. I just recently compared the cassette single version with the LP version which appears on the cd "Operation Stackola" and I do not hear any difference at all between "The Bomb" version, the "Operation Stackola" version and the cassingle version. In other words, there would be no distinction between the 45 and LP version. Can anyone else point out any differences between the 3 sources that I just mentioned that perhaps I am overlooking?

I don't know, but the cassette single version is censored.

I'm just asking if someone can point out the censored words (if there are any) as I don't hear any censorship.

I don't own the full-length album, but unless they re-recorded the vocal track for the "clean" version, I don't hear any words that are edited out either.

Well, this is interesting... I don't have the dirty version either, but I do have both the Clean and Clean Weedless versions, and I looked up the lyrics to the album version on the Internet.

Luniz actually DID re-record his vocals for the different versions! The LP version (presumably... these were the lyrics I found online) has "nigga" and "f**k" all though it. Take the censored versions and substitute "niggas" for "fools," and you get an idea of the original lyrics.

The Clean Weedless mix is yet another recording of the lyrics that removes specific references to marijuana in the song (no easy trick!). It's noticable very early on. The first two lines:

Clean Version (45 version):

Playa, give me some brew and I might chill
'Cause I'm the type that likes to light another joint like Cypress Hill

Clean Weedless:

Playa, give me some brew and I might chill
You know stoned is the way of the walk like Cypress Hill

Basically, if that second line matches the Clean Version, and there is no "nigga" or other profanity in the song, and it runs 4:14, it should be the 45 version.

It sounds like the alternate "clean" lyrics are the standard version.

Here's a link to the lyrics for the Weedless mix:

Clean Weedless

And to the dirty version, which appears to be much longer and not even get to the single lyrics till the last verse:

Dirty

I have a CD-single, or CD-EP, of this song (Noo Trybe 38474) that
has:
1. Clean Bay Ballas Vocal Remix (featuring Dru Down, Richie Rich, E-
40, Shock G and Humpty Hump, Spice 1). actual time: 4:10
2. Gumbo Funk Remix. actual time: 4:50
3. Clean Weedless Mix. actual time: 4:12
4. Instrumental. actual time 4:14

Is track 1 the cassette single version, the CD single version, or a
remix that was released later?

Track one is not the cassette single version. The cassette single version is not on the commercial CD-EP. The instrumental is the only track from the CD-EP that was on the cassette single. The cassette single version is mixed like the Clean Weedless mix, but with some alternate lyrics.

I wonder if Pat has a censored version of the full-length album?

I'm actually wondering if the full length uncensored version was scrubbed after first pressings of the album.

My copy of "Operation Stackola" is Noo Trybe #40523. The matrix number is difficult to determine but I see the numbers 1637 and IFPI LO43. This cd has the "parental advisory" sticker but the version of "I Got 5 On It" is the same as the cassette single which is described above as the "clean version". So, is there another pressing of this cd with a different version?

Since no one has steped forward with a copy of the cd "Operation Stackola" with lyrics that differ from the cassette single, I have changed the comments in the database for this song.

my commercial cassingle issued as noo trybe 38474 only identifies the first track as the "clean version" (4:13)....what is interesting is that the font of the A-side is clearly different than the font of the listing for the B-side.....so it's posible the cardboard sleeve was reprinted

We did get in a promo CD single for this. It declares this on the disc itself, but, being such a small label, has no standard "stock #" listed. However, the inner CD ring states "Full Service Media", with the #'s "FU 4504" and "104504-01" legible inside as well. Here are the details, which features more "label tomfoolery" in regard to listed track times:

Luniz-"I Got 5 On It"
1-Clean Weedless Mix (listed 4:12; actual 4:13)
2-Clean Short Mix (listed 3:59; actual 4:13)
3-Instrumental (listed & actual 4:14)

Just today, I obtained a 3rd promo CD single for "I Got 5 On It," and here are the details for the two promo CD singles that are not yet mentioned.

DPRO-12714
1. Clean Short Mix (listed 3:59; actual 4:05) (The back insert labels it as "Clean Version" but the disc itself says "Clean Short Mix.")
2. Instrumental (listed 4:14)
3. A cappella (listed 4:00)

DPRO-12809 (REMIX)
1. Clean Bay Ballas Vocal Remix (listed 4:12; actual 4:13)
2. Gumbo Funk Remix (listed 4:50; actual 4:51)
3. Clean Weedless Mix (listed 4:12; actual 4:13)

To clear up confusion regarding the various versions, here are some things to note:
- Most importantly, the "clean version" DOES appear on the full-length Operation Stackola CD.
- The "Clean Short Mix" is an edit of the cassingle/LP version, which removes about :08 seconds from the end of the song. (Removing 4:03 to 4:11 of the LP version gives you this version.)
- The promo CD without a catalog number (nicely detailed above by Jim) has the LP version as track 2, even though it's labeled "Clean Short Mix."
- The "Clean Weedless Mix," while containing slightly different lyrics during the verses, doesn't actually remove all of the "weed" references. For one, the chorus was not re-sung, so they're still "messing with that indo weed" in this version, too.
- And finally, the dirty version also appears on Operation Stackola, but it's called "I Got 5 On It (Reprise)." As Brian W. notes, it's full of explicit lyrics.

A note to Pat: You may want to modify the database details about the DJ CD singles. You currently state that the "Clean Short Mix" actually runs 4:13, but then a Billboard Top Hits CD running 4:04 states that it contains the "Clean Short Mix." The notation by the Billboard disc is correct, but the DJ CD single notes are not, because Jim's promo CD, where this info originally came from, is mislabeled. That promo CD doesn't actually contain the "Clean Short Mix," but instead has the full LP version as track 2. The actual "Clean Short Mix" does run 4:05, and it appears on the other DJ CD single I just posted above.
