The two database entries for this #25 track are indicated as alternate takes.
Does anyone know if the song's appearance on "The Jamie/Guyden Story" or
"The Golden Age Of American Rock'n'Roll Vol. 4" are also alternates?

what is the difference between the vinyl 45 and the db
entries warranting an 'alternate take' version moniker?

i have a version of the song on cdr that, except for a
pitch issue, sounds pretty spot on.....i had to adjust the
pitch down to 83.50bpms then the song will run 2:18 and
matches pretty nicely.....if someone can point me in the
direction of where the most notable differences are, i'd
appreciate it....

Compare the original 45 with the cd versions and you will hear an alternate vocal take. Listen to the words "understanding" at :23 and "die" at 1:29.

Ok
David; i did a little checking for you, and alas it is
also the alternate take on both the Ace Golden Age Vol. 4
and The Jamie/Guyden Story.
This track also had an odd find as well while i was
comparing versions. I did the "youtube thing" to locate
a 45 dub, and there are quite a few on there.
As we some folks post a song from cd, and out a pic of a
45, so i try to find ones with obvious surface noise, and
if possible a notation that it's really a 45 dub. There
are several of those too!
But, the first one i played the song is pitched MUCH
faster, i'm taking major faster. So i thought maybe
it's only a pitch difference!
Nope. Still another take.
I found 2 others that are similar in pitch to the CD
version, still an alternate take. The "slow" 45 is most
similar the CD version, like it was from the same
session, but... no cigar.
On both the fast one and slow one, the user wrote it was
from their own personal 45. Both labels, scanned into the
video, had a listed time of 2:20. The "fast" version
actual time is 2:07, the "slow" version actual time 2:19.
There was another of the "slow" one with an actual time
of 2:20, but that dub was also a terribly off-center
pressing.
So, it appeared to me that were 2 very different versions
of this 45, but both had the same label and listed time
as far i can tell.
But again, to recap for David, the version on both the
import CD's above, and the "Twang" cd in the database are
the same alternate take.
and there appears to be 2 different 45's at different
speeds, and both of those were different recordings, and
neither were the same take as the CD's.
[whew].

Unfortunately, the alternate take was also used for the Canadian CD, Treasured Tunes Volume 5. Even the Jamie/Guyden re-issue 45 that was in print in the 1980s has the alternate take.

It does not appear that Donnie Owens ever released an
album. "Need You" appeared on a Jamie 'various artists'
LP in 1961 titled Sounds Of Success that I don't
have (used copies are quite pricey), so I don't know
what take is on it. This LP has been released digitally,
and the version on the digital album is the usual
alternate take found on CD.
