As many of you know, I have an ongoing project to upgrade my personal library to include the best-sounding versions of everything that hit the Hot 100. Best-sounding, at least, to my ears.
My (free and highly recommended) tagging program, Mp3tag, generates HTML files for the directories, so I thought I'd post the files for these years. Each file represents my personal Hot 100 library for a particular year, ranked according to the 2005 edition of Joel Whitburn's Pop Annual book. At present, I've worked my way through the Hot 100 years 1981-1993, with more years to come.
I attempted to include all the different versions of each song released at the time, including LP, commercial 45, and promo 45. Where I could, I used relatively common CDs that I own or owned at some point; I don't have access to every CD ever released. I've relied heavily on some fellow collectors for many of these, especially for most of the tracks from the lower rungs of the chart.
I will update this original post as needed, each time I add a new year. I will update the files periodically, as well, so that they're mostly current (if not 100% current).
If you find these types of lists interesting, then enjoy!

Wow, this list is great! I got 1/3 the way through the 1st year (1981) and realized I had to bookmark this, too. Great info in here - about versions I didn't know, etc. I'm definitely going to have questions for you as I go through this. First one:
Is the single mix of "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" finally on CD?? What's "Ones On 1"?
Also, if you add more years, can I suggest you go back through the '70s (79, 78, etc.) ... or forward? :) That would be an incredible list, too!

Full disclosure: I don't own "Ones On 1", which is a BBC
anniversary compilation from 1988 that includes 32 songs
that hit #1 in the UK from 1967-1988. I found a tagged
lossless track from another collector's collection, which
says that it came from "Ones On 1", but I can't verify.

Yes, it is, I own it. "Ones on 1" is an old UK compilation -- there's a ton of them on Ebay UK.

Wow, what an amazingly thorough list. I noticed a few
clarifications/corrections here & there on some lower
charting singles:
1981 300 ; Talking Out Of Turn [probably 45
version] Moody Blues 04:12 singles+ ]The version on
the Singles CD isn't the U.S. 45 version. The LP version
can be edited to replicate the U.S. 45 but I have yet to
hear the U.S. 45 edit on CD.
1981 313 ; Medley II [45 version] Stars On
45 05:08 Very Best Of, with RG edits at 2.57, 4.32
and 4.39 then sped up by 2.3pct To be 100% accurate,
the 45 version of Medley II has one very brief section
unique to the vinyl 45. It's occurs at about the 2:54
point with the last guitar strum of "A Hard Day's Night"
before the segue into "Please Please Me". The LP version
differs on that segue because the "Things We Said Today"
segment starts before the next downbeat. There's about
.4 seconds that are unique to the 45.
1988 245 ; Never Can Say Goodbye Communards
04:28 Now 1987 This isn't the U.S. 45 version. It
might be the U.K. 45 version. The U.S. 45 version runs
4:01 and I have never found it on any CD.

This seems too good to be true. I've been looking for the single mix since the '80s, and according to all I'm reading here, it's been on CD since 1988 (!) and it's really the single mix (!), and is it really from tape and not cleaned vinyl (!) ?
Please tell me I'm not dreaming :)

+1 on that!!! It must have been an incredible amount of
work to put this together.
Looking thru the 1983 (one of my favorite years for
music) list, I notice a couple missing 12"
versions..."Tell Her About It" and "I'll Tumble 4 Ya".
If you need dubs of these let me know...

Another 1981 correction for your benefit, Ron. "I Ain't Gonna Stand For It" from the At The Close Of A Century box is also the LP version. The LP version has overdubs that aren't on the 45, but the 45 is gettable through Motown Year By Year 1980.

Thanks for the corrections! I really appreciate the amazing amount of information that we have, collectively, here in the forum. If you see something amiss or incomplete in the big lists, please post here so I can fix it.

Another correction:
1984 147   ; The Runner [probably 45 version] Manfred Mann's Earth Band 03:42 &nb sp; The Complete Greatest Hits Of Manfred Mann 1963-2003 Disc 2
That's not the correct 45 version on this disc (although the running time is suspiciously close to the 45 version). The U.S. 45 truncates much of the intro from LP version, with a shorter fade-in and the vocal starting at about :07.5. The 45 fades out earlier than the LP version for a running time of about 3:38 (hard to time exactly due to fade-ins/outs). It doesn't have any other edits besides the fade-in/fade-out differences.

With Brian's help, I can tell this is definitely the single mix and definitely from tape. And since the UK "Ones on 1" CD was so affordable, and now that I've confirmed this is the right mix from tape, I bought the used CD on ebay - totalling $3.86 - and that includes Airmail postage to the US! There's one more left at that price, if anyone here is interested.
I can't believe this has been on CD since '88! Geesh! Great detective work by Brian, tracking this mix down with discogs.

I started work on 1980, with the first 100 tracks listed above. Please inspect at your convenience, and please send me corrections.
I've also updated the other years to include corrections and additions. I think I still have to address a few of the above corrections from this thread, though...

I hope you'll continue to work your way backwards thru the 1970s (and forward thru the 1990s):)

Glad you can use them, Paul.
Up next is 1996-1999, with a lot of help from Chuck M. These probably won't be much help for selecting which version sounds the best, because we're trying to assemble as much as we can from promo CD singles and other primary sources.
After that, I'll be able to back at least as far as 1974, thanks to Chuck M. and a few others.
