Young Love, the debut single from the debut album by Janet Jackson, only made it to #64 on the pop charts, but was a top 10 R&B hit for the young actress & singer.
While the album version runs nearly 5 minutes, the edit is only 3:39 (according to the label). To create it only takes two edits:
1) Remove 1:30 - 1:45 (starting on the beat & the word "love").
2) Remove 3:02 - 4:05 from the newly-edited file.
No early fade is required; in fact, editing the version from the Janet Jackson CD, mine ends slightly early (again based on the label info), running 3:36.5.
My edit points are based on her lip-synch performance on American Bandstand. Solid Gold edited the middle section further, but they were doing an intro with talking over part of the song... I suspect the edit was in-house as opposed to a radio edit or something similar.
All labels, promo or commercial, on Discogs show a running time of 3:39.
I hope this helps somebody!

I have a dub of the 45 if you need, Gene.

Wouldn't mind double-checking my edit; if you send it to me and my edit points are wrong, I'll update this post with correct edit points.
Thanks!

Thanks to The Hits Man, I can now confirm that the 45 is an edit of the LP version, and that my edit points above are consistent with the 7" single.
Two interesting notes:
#1 - My LP version (taken from the CD) starts out about .4% to .5% faster than the 45 RPM single version sent to me... and either it speeds up as it goes on, or the 45 starts slowing down starting about 2 minutes in... because my LP version starts running away from the 45.
#2 - My edit ran 3:36.5. The single runs 3:39, which matches the label.
Correcting for tempo and matching the final audio beats shows actually only about one second missing from the edit of the LP version... still, it's not the "entire" 7" single version.
Thanks again for the help with this early hit from one of the superstars of the 80s & 90s!
