The database correctly notes the single version runs 3:12 on "Greatest Hits". (I can verify that from a DJ 45), however all 45
labels I've ever seen list it as 3:09. Also I have the DJ single and several re-issue 45s on this song, and I've noticed that that
all stereo issues of the 45 version, including the Greatest Hits CD, if they are not mono, are barely stereo.

The 45 was indeed mixed in very narrow stereo, especially compared to the LP mix. It's not all mixed to dead center, though, but you'd think it was if you switched back and forth from the LP mix. An out-of-phase-sum (OOPS) test shows what's in stereo (split left and right into two channels, invert one, then sum). In headphones, with my naked ears, I can make out a little panning to one of the guitar lines in the second half of the song. The rest is pretty subtle.

The 45 mix of "Walk This Way" is also quite a bit narrower than the LP mix.

Would you say that the Aerosmith 45 versions are dedicated
mixes?

I don't know about the ones above (I have them, but have never compared) but the edited reissue 45 of "Dream On" absolutely is - and I wish we had the remix without the edits, I like it a lot!

"Dream On" first came as an edit/remix 45 in 1973. It was reissued in 1976 as
the LP version.

Also of note is that I was able to listen to a remastered edition of "Greatest
Hits". Sadly, all the 45 versions from the original issue have been replaced with
LP versions.

Can you explain how to tell one greatest hits CD from the
other? Which is which?

"Sweet Emotion" 45 is a remix as it
contains
different, louder reverb than the LP version (and the
multi-tracks are needed to create the 45 ending).

Side note: I prefer the David Thoener promo remix that
charted on Mainstream Rock in 1991. Did that ever get
released commercially?

I'm not completely sure, but the 45 of "Walk This Way"
sounds like an edited, narrowed version of the LP mix...

No, sorry I can't as I was sent a rip of it, not the actual CD.

Yes, but mostly outside the US - Europe, Australia, etc. - both vinyl and CD-singles.

And thank you for asking the question - I had no idea it even existed until I read it! And yesterday at Amoeba Records I bought the European 1997 re-issue of their Greatest Hits CD, which has the 1991 remix as a bonus track.

Yeah, I didn't think it made a commercial US CD, but
maybe it made a compilation CD that I was unfamiliar
with.

A little mislabeling here. The version found on those vinyl and CD singles

was indeed the remixed version, but it was not taken from Pandora’s Box.

The original mix is on Pandora’s Box.

There is also a longer remixed version found on the Armageddon

Soundtrack.

Hey Chartman!

Thanks for pointing me to the 'Armageddon' Soundtrack.

I looked on the back cover of the CD and I noticed it was
mixed by David Thoener.

I wonder if it's a longer take of his original promo CD
version, or yet another mix?

I'll have to seek it out.
