the cassingle issued as giant 19382 contains the "freeze mix" as the a-side and it runs 4:06....the second track on the b-side is the "album version".....this should be noted in the db....

I could be COMPLETELY wrong, but somehow I think the "Freeze mix" made it onto the Color Me Badd album or CD, but the 'original' "album version" meant from the *soundtrack* of 'New Jack City".
Can anybody verify??

the only place i've found the "freeze mix" is on the promo cd single or maybe, i think, it's on the import cd single.....either way i've got the correct version on cdr if any one needs it...

The Freeze Mix is also on the domestic CD maxi single, which featured:
1. Smoothed Out Mix
2. Smoothed Out Mix/Long Version
3. Instrumental
4. Master Mix
5. Freeze Mix
Catalog number is Giant 9 40031-2, UPC 0 9362-40031-2 0
I also have the "Love You Up" mix on an import CD, which substituted that phrase for radio stations that objected to the more graphic lyric.

Ed, does the album version have different lyrics than the Freeze Mix? I'm wondering if the Master Mix on my CD single is the album version. The chorus is the same, but the verses have completely different lyrics.

The album version, which is the one I heard on the radio in my area, has the first verse lyrics (from memory):
Hey, beautiful lady
I need you tonight... etc.
There was nothing before these lyrics other than the intro with the "ah tick tock" sample from "La Di Da Di" and the "oooh-ing" by the band.
I remember the video had alternate lyrics, and the verses were not even sung with the same melody as the LP verses. I'm pretty sure it was the "Smoothed Out Mix" from the CD single (which I have somewhere in my collection), but it could have been the "Freeze Mix."

Brian, if I can find my maxi single, I'll let you know about the "Master Mix." There's a good chance my copy is up in Michigan, though.

I have obtained a cassette maxi single which contains the "freeze mix" and I have compared it to the version found on the CMB cd and I find them to be identical. Ed, have you compared the cassette single you have with the CMB cd and have you found them to be different? The matrix number on my CMB cd is 24429-2 RE-1 SRC-02*M1 S5. I also checked the version found on Pump Up The Jam 90's Dance Hits and it also is the "freeze mix".

no i have not.....since the cassingle has both the "freeze mix" as the a-side and the "album version" as the b-side i assumed that they were/are different...i will check the freeze mix from my cassingle version the album version from the cd cmb in a moment....

i just listened to the song "i wanna sex you up" by color me badd......the cassingle contains, on the A-side, the "freeze mix" which runs 4:05 and is identical to the version from the cd "cmb" issued as giant 24429....what is unusual is that as the B-side of the cassingle it states "album version".....i just listened to that track and it has completely different lyrics......go figure.....so the "freeze mix" is the same as the lp version.....

Hi Ed,
By "album version", I think they meant the 'New Jack City Soundtrack' album, which is where the song came from originally (the CMB album came later after the song started to become a hit).
I'm only going by memory as I have not recently verified this.

That's true. The soundtrack to New Jack City has the version with first verse lyrics "Hey beautiful lady..." They must have opted for the 45 version ("Freeze Mix") when they released the CMB album.

For "I Wanna Sex You Up", the database currently states that: the cassette single contains the "freeze mix" and runs (4:06). Because the cassette single's labeling of the B-side as "album version" is somewhat misleading, I think it would be helpful if the database would elaborate a bit more on this to help add clarification and in turn avoid confusion for readers. Here's one possible suggestion:
The cassette single contains the "freeze mix", which is the same as the LP version, and runs (4:06). The cassette single's B-side states "album version", which runs (4:03), but this is actually the movie soundtrack version and is significantly different from the "freeze mix" 45 and LP version.
(Ed, if you don't mind, could you please double-check the actual run time of your cassette single's B-side and report back? Thanks!)

the B-side of the cassingle issued as giant 19382 which is listed as the "album version" runs 4:06 and must be the "new jack city" movie soundtrack album version, while the cassingles' A-side contains the "freeze mix" which is really just the album version from the cd CMB.....they both runsn 4:05/4:06 in length but as aaron points out the beginning lyrics are different...

A little extra info for this song...
The commercial 45 is Giant 7-19382, with:
A: I Wanna Sex You Up ("Freeze Mix" - printed 4:06, actual 4:06)
B: I Wanna Sex You Up ("Album Version" - printed 4:05, actual 4:06)
Both sides say "From the Giant Records Motion Picture Soundtrack Album NEW JACK CITY", which is consistent with the comments above; there was no Color Me Badd album at the time this was a hit.
The "Freeze Mix" on the 45 A-side was the hit that got all the airplay in the US. At 0:29, the lyrics start with "Come inside take off your coat". It's on the CMB album (which I don't have), and also on these compilations:- Sounds Of The '90s - 1991 (Time-Life R614-02, 2001)
- Razor & Tie Presents '90s Style (Razor & Tie OPCD-4549, 1996; digitally exactly 0.5 dB louder than Sounds...1991)
- Pump Up The Jam! - '90s Dance Hits (Realm OPCD-3601, 2002)
The sound quality on the Realm CD is just a little less compressed than the other two, and I find it a little preferable. Not a big difference, though, to my ears.
The "Album Version" on the 45 B-side was the UK single version, and presumably got all the airplay in England. At 0:29, the lyrics start with "Hey beautiful lady". It's on the New Jack City soundtrack (which I don't have), and is also on these compilations:- Now That's What I Call Music 20 (Virgin EMI PolyGram CD NOW 20, 1991)
- Mega Dance Party '92 (Columbia Germany 471345 2, 1992; faded early to 3:49)
The two versions are the same from 2:16 onward.
