As best as I am able to discern (think I nailed it, but at the very end of the song, during the fading ocean sfx, it's a little difficult to exactly distinguish between the now-very faint sfx and the vinyl surface noise), both my commercial and my promo 45 (which both happen to be stereo, but for which no reference is made on the label, in either case) have a listed time of (4:35), but an actual time of (4:45).

The 45 is an edit of the stereo LP version. I was able to match the pitch and put the edits in the right places, but I also could not tell where the song was completely faded out on the 45. The copy I used as a guide had lots of crackles and surface noise; however, I could still detect some rain sound effects past the 4:45 mark. If anyone else has timed their 45 copies, please post your findings.

my commercial 45 for the doors song "riders on the storm" issued as elektra 45738 states the run time as 4:35 but actually runs 4:48 and is an edit of the full length 7:08 version....the vinyl 45 is stereo even though it does not state it....thanks john for the tireless effort to re-create the true vinyl 45.....thanks tons!!

Does anyone know if iTunes and Amazon have the true single version of "Riders on the Storm"? They are currently showing stereo and mono versions running 4:58 with the title: "Riders On The Storm - Single". Because of the long fade on the song, I can't tell based on timing alone.

Thanks,

Jon O.

I believe it is the 45 version Jon. The last 10-12 seconds of the file I downloaded are silent (and I cranked up the volume to the maximum level as the rain sound effects kicked in at the end of the song).

Cool, just what I was wanting to know. Thanks for the info, Santi!

Haha, guess I should have waited a couple months and snagged it from iTunes, Amazon or Rhapsody.

As Ed correctly points out, commercial 45 copies of The Doors' "Riders in the Storm" are in stereo. Can anyone pinpoint when the mono mix first surfaced? Was it on a promo 45?

Todd, my DJ 45 (with a star on the "Riders On The Storm" side) has "Changeling" on the flip side, just like the commercial single. Both sides play stereo, although there's no stereo indication on either side, aside from the "EKS" prefix.

This is a Phillips Recording Company (pre-PRC) pressing, with the "PH" letters in the deadwax. Elektra often used more than one pressing plant for DJ 45s at the time, so it's possible there could be another U.S. promo floating around somewhere.

Both my digital single and the Doors singles set have
this song running 4:51. Is that the actual run time of
the 45?

Jim had timed his at 4:45 and Ed at 4:48. I'm guessing
when I did Ed's recreation perhaps his 45 ran a bit
fast.

John, the promo 45 dub I referenced just above your post clocked in at (4:47). Even though my copy is in NM condition, trying to determine whether the sound at the very end is rainfall, tape hiss or surface noise is about as futile as using one's tongue as a rain gauge.

... Although it's not as gross. ;)
