Just wondering if anybody knows if the Stax 50th 2-CD mini box released this past Tuesday has the "true" 45-version of Isaac Hayes' "Shaft" (without the "mother", etc.). It doesn't seem to be available anywhere else.

Thanks.

The version of "In The Rain" is the DJ 45 (although there's a seven second difference between the CD run time and the DJ 45 run time according to Pat's liner notes)?

I talked to the guy who does the actual mastering at Fantasy (Concord) a while back and he says the mono 45 master tape of Theme From Shaft is missing. Probably lost at Stax a long time ago.

The disappearance may not be recent. My Stax/Enterprise 45, purchased new when Shaft was a hit, sounds like it came from a poor tape copy. The highs drift in and out and the whole thing sounds muddy.

I was working in Top 40 radio in Phoenix then and we played records on the air, not tapes. At some point after Shaft peaked, but was still on our playlist, we replaced our worn copy with a new one - and it had the same problem.

This makes me wonder if something happened to the master tape 35 years ago.

Well, it IS possible to recreate the 45 version in stereo. I know a couple people who have done it. HOW they've done it I can't figure out -- I can't figure out where in the song they got the instrumental bits to dub over the cursing -- but it sounds seamless.

Sorry to bump this up. I constructed my question poorly. Let me try again.

Is the version of "In The Rain" on that Stax set the DJ 45? There's a seven second difference in what Pat shows as the DJ run time and the run time of the track on the CD set ((3:15) vs. (3:22)).

Thanks.

I have finally found a 45 dub of "Shaft". It is the
"clean" original. Kind of a muddy stereo is best way to
put it. There is some noise but in pretty good shape.
Sad that version will probably never see light of day,
unless Stax would dub and digitize. I'm not sure why
they have not tried to. You can only guess on reasons.

Is yours a commercial or a promo? I thought that all
commercial copies were mono. My promo is mono/stereo, and
the stereo side is the same version as the mono (ie-no
"mother").

I believe the dub was from the stereo promo 45. Like I
said, wasn't very good stereo separation, but no doubt
it is.
Hykker if you want I'll shoot you and MP3 of copy I
have.

My promo 45 is presumably mono and has the
stock B side on it. I've yet to play it
since getting it in the mail.
