Looks like I need some help with the entry "What's My Name" by Snoop Doggy dogg. I suspect that the LP title is "Who Am I (What's My Name)" and the 45 version is simply "What's My Name" if someone could confirm that. I am also guessing that the 45 is truly a different version than what appears on the LP and runs about 4:13, as found on the Rhino "Millennium Hip Hop Party" cd.

Yes, on the import CD single I have, the title is simply "What's My Name." Although I don't have the vinyl 45, the lead track on my single is the version that appears on Millennium Hip Hop Party. This version has different lyrics which remove most of the profanities. It also ends different than the LP version.

One more note: The edited version of Doggystyle does NOT contain the clean 45 version of "What's My Name" or any of the album's singles. They re-edited the entire CD for that "remastered" release, and they did a very poor editing job.

After several years of searching, I finally tracked down a copy of an earlier pressed promo CD single for "What's My Name." I had long suspected what the differences are, and my suspicions have been confirmed. Until today, the only promo CD I could find was:

PRCD 5335-2
1. Radio Mix (actual 4:15)

At 2:22 of this version, the word "bitch" is not censored. What always sounded odd to me is that the word sounded like it was inserted. There was something just a tad unnatural about it, as if just that word was punched into a previously recorded vocal. Anyhow, the matrix of this CD includes an "RE-2."

As of today, I now own:

PRCD 5268-2
1. Radio Mix (actual 4:15)

The only difference between this CD and the one previously mentioned is that the word "bitch" is muted at 2:22. This same version also appears on the import CD single. The promo CD matrix of this copy includes an "RE-1."

I have the Cassette Single and just checked it. The B-word is muted at 2:22 on it.

I noticed there's no Parental Advisory sticker on the cover of the single, which makes me think there might have been if the word had been left in.

Now, all these years later, that word is alot more commonly used and I doubt that word alone would be enough to get a song slapped with a Parental Advisory
label.

The Snoop and Dre radio mixes are pretty edgy, even for today's standards. I wonder if Death Row Records was trying to see how much they could get away with and still get airplay. Why else re-issue a promo CD single only to re-insert the word "bitch"?

If their intention was to see how much they could get
away with, I'm surprised that they reissued the promo
single with just a "Radio Mix" label like they did for
the first one. How were DJ's supposed to know the
difference between the two?

I think that was the point: don't call attention to it. Also, given how scarce the first promo CD is, it seems they may not have pressed up many of them. The second one with "bitch" dubbed back in is far more common, so it's likely the only choice most radio stations had.
