Last week, I did something I rarely do anymore. I listened to the local hot AC station, on broadcast FM radio. They played "Underneath It All" by No Doubt, but it was clearly missing the rap during the bridge by Lady Saw. What is the name of this mix, and how is it available, if at all?

Sorry it was beneath you to listen to a broadcast station. I work for one and it must be beneath me to work for one.
That mix was sent to us as well by our Interscope rep at the time. We never played it when it was out, but later put it in when we adjusted our gold library.....

From what I can tell, the OP was not implying he was “above” listening to broadcast radio. Hopefully your comment is just missing the “wink” at the end. (Of course, I apologize if you two know each other and are just joking around) I don't listen much to broadcast radio either--simply because there is not much content that is of interest to me. I can listen to my iPod in the car, which has pretty much all that I need.

Interesting. I've never heard the "rapless" version of that song. I have the promo CD single, and it contains the Radio Edit and LP Version, IIRC. We always played the Radio Edit at my old top 40 station, and it did contain the rap.

Apparently, there is a "no rap" version of "Hey Baby," too. Does anyone know if these were on promo CDs, or were they serviced only online?

Aaron, the "rapless" version is also mixed differently. I know I have a copy somewhere that was recorded off my local AC station back when the song was current. I'll see if I can find it tonight.

Yes, my local AC station also played the "no rap" version of "Hey Baby." This version is actually available on one of the promotional 12" singles. The label incorrectly lists it as the LP version, but it is really the "no rap" version. This version can not be edited from the LP version due to some of the instrumentals during the bridge where the rap would have been. I have the 12" so I'll check for the catalog number this evening.

And there really is an "LP" version of this song too!! The CHR I was working for at the time received several vinyl copies of No Doubt's album. I grabbed a copy for the novelty of it (I think the rest got dumpstered), and recall it being a 2 record set due to how "hot" the songs were cut on it. I'm not sure we even still had a turntable at the station at the time, maybe one in production, definitely not in the air studios.

I worked in commercial radio for 23 years, and know Steve personally. Trust me, he meant no derogatory comment by what he said I'm sure.

TM Studios at one time had the no rap version on GoldDisc 3241N, but it looks like its been discontinued.

It wasn't my intent to insult radio or any form of media, sorry.

I just hadn't listened to that station or even that radio band in a long time. It's not beneath me. In fact, I heard a version of something there that I hadn't previously heard, and am now looking to find it. Add to that list "Hey Baby" without Bounty Killer.

Here is my promo CD single info for both songs:

-No Doubt f/Lady Saw-"Underneath It All" (INTR-10788-2)
1-Radio Edit (listed 4:08; actual 4:07)
2-Album Version (listed 5:02; actual 5:03)

While I own just the one, my friend Tom happens to own a second promo: a non-numbered, 1-track "No Rap" version, with a listed time of (5:06).

-No Doubt f/Bounty Killer-"Hey Baby" (INTR-10614-2)
1-(non-described version) (listed 3:27; actual 3:26)

While I also own just the one promo for this one, my friend Tom happens to own two other import CD singles for it; one includes what he specifies as a "Remix-Dirty", while he shows the other one as including both a "Remix" and a "Club Mix" on it.

Great info, Jim! 995wlol sent me a dub of his 12" version, and as he correctly states above, you cannot re-create the "No Rap" version of "Hey Baby."

Digging this up from 4.5 years ago... Has anyone acquired a copy of the no rap version of "Underneath It All" since we last discussed?

This came across on a Chartbreakers Weekly CD that Jones Radio(formally Broadcast Programming) put out(similar to HitDisc). When Jones bought out TM Century and called it JonesTM they created a 3200 Golddisc series with cuts that Jones had that weren't on Golddiscs. Underneath It All and Hey Baby both without the rap appeared in this series(actually on the same disc - 3241).

I've ONLY heard that radio edit on MY own local
station...the rap doesn't sound offensive (and it's the
catchiest part..IMHO)..may the over-5 minute
length..the partial third verse and some of the
ending's gone from that edit..maybe it's because Lady
Saw, one of the group and leader Gwen Stefani's many
guest stars over the years, may have been under
contract and also required extra pay...I'm in Southern
Calif., the thread starter doesn't have a location
listed..

Didn't Jones create their own custom edits? I have a
bunch of the Chartbreakers CDs and any number of cuts have
notations to the effect of "JRN extra clean", etc.

Yes! In fact, I've acquired a copy of two different "no rap" versions. I have one from a TM Studios GoldDisc that runs 3:31 and one from a promo CD-R that runs 5:04. They are two entirely different recordings.

The 3:31 version:
- Same mix and take as the LP version
- Edits off the radio tuning sound effects and starts with the opening drums
- Lady Saw is removed from the mix from 2:30 to 2:32, and there is a unique section that cannot be created from the LP version

The 5:04 version:
- Has the same drum track as the LP version, but all other instruments were re-recorded in a slightly higher key
- Vocals have been re-recorded in a slightly higher key
- Song has an instrumental section from 2:40 to 3:08 where Lady Saw would be on the LP version

The 5:04 re-recording was a complete surprise when I listened to it today. The CD-R promo is just a plain silver disc with the song title and version written on it with a Sharpie. There are no listed times, and I honestly thought it was the same version as on the GoldDisc until I played it. Crazy!

Yes they did do their own edit on a lot of songs. Helped me out several times on airing a really clean version that was not available from the labels.

I found one of those "Chartbreakers" CDs on the shelf. From January 18, 2002 CHW-0202 and track 13 is a "No Rap" version of Hey Baby.

I heard two distinct clicks at the beginning, which either means I have a dying copy, or possibly it was lifted from the vinyl 12" promo. IDK.
I might play around with it a bit in Audacity to see if the clicks can be minimized.

I didn't actually look in the TM Century database to see if that was also on a GoldDisc. I noted above the 3200 series, which I did have 3241. It has "Underneath it all" too!

Our more "adult variety" oriented local station played an
edit that was, as far as I can tell, the LP mix but with
the rap section taken out. You could hear Lady Saw's cry
of "Reeeaaaalll" right before the edit point. I would
imagine if this had been a dedicated mix, Lady Saw's vocal
track would have been muted entirely. Not certain if this
was something done in-house or if it was serviced to
radio. This edit also ditched the sound effects heard at
the top and tail of the song.
