I recently purchased a copy of the Readers Digest Box Set "Leading Ladies" as it has a few hard to find 45 versions.

I have a question about "Mack The Knife" by Ella Fitzgerald.

"Mack The Knife" by Ella Fitzgerald has several times listed in the database.

The 5:05 -5:12 times seem to be the LP Length. Then there are other discs that have a version that clock around 4:40 and the database lists that as "45 length but missing :06 of the 45 introduction".

This bring us to the "Leading Ladies" Box Set which has a time of 4:21 with no notation.   Does anyone know what version this is?

Thanks.

I don't have the Leading Ladies set, but the 4:21 version would have to be either an edit or a different recording, as I timed my 45 at 4:39 (give or take a second) with about 4:32 of that being the actual song (the rest audience noise). The hit version is a live recording during which Ella forgets some of the words and has to improvise, although the humour seems to be lost on the German-speaking audience, as there is barely a chuckle to be heard. (Perhaps the 4:21 version doesn't fade in until after Ella's spoken introduction, which doesn't begin until after the music starts??)

In the database entry for the The Complete Ella In Berlin CD, Pat provides excellent information on how to re-create the 45 version from this CD, although you will need the previous track, "Lorelei", as its last few seconds are the first few seconds heard on the "Mack The Knife" 45.

I only have one of the CDs noted in the database as having the "LP length" of the song, Jazz Divas Gold. The 45 version can also be re-created from this CD, as on this CD the track fades in earlier and fades out later than the 45.

Fetta:

Does the 4:21 version of Ella Fitzgerald's "Mack the Knife" on the Leading Ladies Reader's Digest box set sound like it's the same live Berlin performance/recording as the hit version?

i am attempting to make the 45 from the "The Complete Ella In Berlin CD"
CD, however I can not. The actual song timing is difficult to determine, as
the end note keeps on going. Also, does the 45 fade in and/or out? At what
point of the prior song does "Mack" start? A dub of the 45 would be most
welcome, Paul! thanks.

I wish I could help, David, but I currently only have the LP length on CD.

i just picked up the cd 'pure jazz' issued as verve/utv
314520191 because it had the longest mono version of the
song and here's what needs to be done to that version to
make the vinyl 45....first you'll need to do a quick fade
in for approx 0:01.50 from 0:06.50 to approx 0:08, right
before she says thank you, then you'll need to do a fade
out for 0:04 from 4:43 to 4:47 on the 5:15 version.....this
re-constructed version will match the vinyl 45 running
4:41.....the vinyl list a run time of 4:42....
