I tried folding down my stereo version of this [from Hard To Find 45s On
CD, Vol. 7 (Eric 11513-2)
] to see if it sounded like the 45 (Capitol 4897),
and it does not. When I fold down the stereo, Bobby's vocal becomes slightly
phased, whereas his vocal on the 45 sounds fine. The 45 version has a bit of
echo added as well. If anyone can confirm, this might be another specific 45
mix we have to look for.

Hi Paul, just FYI that particular Eric CD has a mastering
defect on this song, it is out of phase with Bobby's vocal
over in one channel.
There still may very well be a 45 vs. stereo difference,
but you should try the fold-down using any other CD to get
an accurate result.
It was the only track on that CD with a phase issue.

Also note, the Capitol Stereo mix has overload distortion on the last verse on every version I heard it on, LP or CD. The mono mix sounds cleaner on the 45, maybe the echo covered up that fault.

I finally had a chance to check out a 45 dub for this
song. I folded the stereo mix to mono and did a close
comparison.

Paul you're absolutely correct the 45 mix is quite
different from the stereo LP mix. As you noted Bobby's
vocal has a lot more added reverb.

The backing vocals have a LOT more reverb on top of that,
and the singers are overdubbed one or two more times
making the backing sound more like a choir in the 45. By
comparison in the stereo mix you can only hear one guy
and I think 2 women singing the high harmonies.

The overload distortion near the end is present on the 45
but less noticeable in mono. It also occurs in the intro
on the 45 as well. They really cranked those knobs to get
the chorus to sound "big."

The full album mono LP is posted on YouTube; there isn't any echo on the
backing vocals on that version of the title song.
