I know technically this song would be off-topic since it
peaked at #41 in Billboard. However, I would just like
to get some kind of confirmation about a particular
version of it.

The album version from its parent album "It Takes Two"
runs around 3:47. I believe this was the same version
issued as the lead-off track on the US Cassette Single.
(Didn't see a Vinyl US 45 listing for it). The CD "Radio
Days '80's Pop" (EMI Special Markets 72434-98738-2-7)
has a version that runs about 3:25. This version seems
to cut out a few lines from the first verse and also
lacks the horns that are heard later in the song during
an instrumental break. My question is, could this 3:25
version be the UK 45 Version? Discogs does show a 45 in
the UK that is specifically labelled as "UK Version" on
the 45 with a 3:25 running time. Just wanted to know if
anyone here has the UK 45
and if they could confirm the differences I mentioned
exist on it. From the Discogs listings of the song, it
looks as though the UK may have been the only ones who
got this edited version as their single. All the others
seem to point to the Album Version being released as the
Single everywhere else.

Not sure if this helps, but here are the details of the promo CD single:

DPRO-4351
1. 7" Mix (listed 3:40; actual 3:46)
2. AC Mix (listed 4:10; actual 4:06)

I have that promo. It's the only place on
CD I know of with the AC Mix, which is
what I heard played on the radio. It's why
I bought the Cassette Single years ago.

For anyone wondering, the AC Mix (running
about 4:06) has an acappela intro as
opposed to the Album/Single Version's
instrumental intro. I don't hear anything
else different about it. It's basically an
edit of the Long Version running over 5
minutes that appears on a few foreign CD
Singles.

The version you described is almost certainly the UK 45 version. My vinyl 45 runs 3:24 and says
(UK Version) on the label. This was also the 45 version here in New Zealand. The UK version
contains an edit at :34 and the instrumental section is different to the US 45 version. It lacks
the horns found in the US 45, however they haven't been mixed out. They just edited this part in
such a way that it uses a different instrumental section from the 'long version'.

This song didn't chart here but was certainly an airplay hit and it's always been a favourite of
mine. I've been searching for the UK version on CD for 30 years, unsuccessfully I might add, so
it's good to know it's out there.

Hope this helps.

Funny story with me and this song when I first started
looking for it in the late 90's (before I had the
Internet or even knew that some record stores sold used
CD's).

A music catalog that I had at the time listed a Various
Artists CD titled, "Lost Hits Of The 80's" which
included the Soulsister song in the tracklist. However,
after I bought it and it came in the mail, I realized
the song was nowhere on the actual disc itself, even
though it was listed as Track 3 on the back insert. So
naturally, I was P.O.'d for awhile. Then a few years
later I came across the "Radio Days" CD I mentioned and
when I got home and listened to it, something sounded
different about it, but I wasn't sure what. It took me
awhile to realize that a few lines from the first verse
were edited out, and then I noticed the horns were also
missing in the instrumental section. So I felt cheated
again, lol. About 2000, I finally got the Internet and
found the parent album "It Takes Two" on eBay with the
right 3:47 version I was looking for. I had given up on
finding the AC Mix which I heard a few times on the
radio since the promo never seemed to be available
anywhere, but I eventually found one in 2013. And I'm
glad I kept the "Radio Days" CD, since I see now that it
has such a rare version of the song.

If there were a group of songs that should have made top 40 based on how often you heard them on the radio, this song would be near the top. A gem! Nice story thecdguy!

Is this from your collection Aaron? Both thecdguy and I have been trying to find this promo CD for quite some time. I am curious if it is one you are missing...

The file I sent was actually ripped from Ron's collection, but I do have the disc. I just didn't rip my copy last August, because Ron's was already on my hard drive.

There was a Belgian single that featured the Single
Version, Long Version, and Instrumental Version. Pretty
sure the Single Version on this CD is the same as the 7"
Version released in the U.S.

Too bad that even Sirius/XM isn't playing this, even as a
Treasure Chest song.

I forgot to mention before that I got that single off Ebay not long after I got the full CD. The "Long Version" is actually labelled as "Lung Version" on the back cover and on the disc itself. It's basically just a longer version of the AC Mix, as it has the same acappella intro, but it also has some extra vocalizing and a brief section of handclapping/harmonizing. The Instrumental Version is mostly instrumental, but has some vocal harmonizing towards the end. Track 1, as far as I can tell, is the same as the Album and Single Version (with the exception of the UK Single that was previously mentioned).

Did we decide Top 40 radio played the AC mix more than the 7" mix, even though the 7" mix was the first track on the promo CD?

The station I was at in late '89 was more of a hot AC, but we played what I presume was the 7" mix. Don't I've ever heard
a version of this with an acapella intro.

I'm almost certain I heard the song on New
Jersey 101.5 FM circa 1989-90, and I
specifically remember the Acapella intro being
played (which would be the AC Mix).

Z100 never played the acapella (AC mix). I heard it a few times back then. I always Dan thought it was a top 40 hit. It was a catchy fun song...

I know that was posted 4 years ago, but what channel played "Treasure Chest
songs" on SXM? And do they still?

When I mentioned Treasure Chest, I think it's 80s on 8 that
plays songs using that label. Songs that aren't in their
normal rotation.

It WAS a top-40 hit in both Radio & Records and The Gavin
Report which were based only on CHR playlists (and no
sales component).

What I seemed to recall about the record when it was
released in the US is Top-40 tried to embrace it as Top-
40 was always looking for uptempo pop to balance out the
rap-flavored and the harder-rock records that the active
public was embracing. Maybe they thought it could become
the next "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go"...

When it first came out, I didn't love it as it seemed
anachronistic & a little gummy. I couldn't play it in the
clubs I was working.

But, I soon got a call from a local buddy of mine who I
worked with on a couple of early Sundazed releases (Al
Quaglieri) asking if I had a copy to give him because he
really liked the record. I figured if he liked it, there
must be something to it.

It soon became one of my favorites of that time period
(and still is).

Andy
