This song peaked below the Top 40 and was only available commercially in the US as a Cassette Single (which is single-sided, by the way).
There's two versions on the promo CD single, an Edit running about 4:16 and the LP Version running about 5:57. There's no
indication in the Discogs listing as to how long the song runs on the Cassingle, so does anyone have it and can
confirm if it's the edit or the LP Version? It does say on the Cassette itself that the "Original Version appears
on the MCA Original Motion picture Soundtrack, MCA-10239, "Thelma And Louise", which makes me think the Edit might
be on the Cassette Single (assuming the LP Version is the Original Version and it was Edited later).
Thank you for any information regarding this.

Dan, the cassette single contains the edit. We timed it at (4:11) at the time.

For those who are wondering how you make the edit:
Keep everything from 0:00 to 1:50
Remove 1:50 to 3:32
Keep 3:32 to the end(length varies from 6 min to 5:57)
Basically you remove the second verse and chorus.

Is there a speed difference between the files running 5:57
and the ones running 6:00? Or, a quicker fade?
The reason I ask is the cassette single runs 4:11 and the
promo CD single runs 4:14.

John - All versions I have of the song run about 127.3 BPM, including both the "Album Version" and "Edit" from TM Century (almost certainly digital clones from the promo CD single).
The "Album Version" from TM Century hits its last note at 5:55 and has faded to silence just before 5:57.
The "Edit" from TM Century hits its last note just after 4:13, and has faded to silence just after 4:14. It matches the version from Schwartz Brothers Compact Disc Sampler Vol. 9 exactly.
I don't believe that there are any versions on CD out there that run as long as 6:00.
That said, cassette decks and cassettes can have huge variations in speed. I think the 4:11 timing may be speed error due to the cassette medium, and not due to a different edit, an earlier fade, or an intentional speed difference.

For many years Joel personally timed the charted cassette singles with a stopwatch to come up with the times listed in
the Pop Annual. Thanks in large part to this group, I discovered that a lot of those timings came up a bit short. As
Ron mentioned above, that is a pitfall with cassettes and cassette playback devices. I'm going to chalk up the (4:11)
timing to this issue and will now change it to (4:14) in our internal database so it will be correct in the next Pop
Annual edition.

FYI, the music video runs 4:14(plus 9 seconds of silence), So John's analysis
that the 4:11 is/was a tape deck issue is correct.
