Attention, fellow Top 40 completists... Allow me to present a new list of radio edits that have appeared on promotional CD releases, but are not mentioned or acknowledged in the 10th Edition of Top 40 Music on Compact Disc. The underlying difference between this listing and the other "DJ edits" message thread is this: I do not own a copy of any of the CDs listed below, but I have determined through extensive research that these discs do exist and contain official Top 40 DJ edits. For each promo CD, I've provided the artist, song title, the radio edit run time(s) as printed or reported on the CD cover, and the catalog number. If a question mark is present within the entry, it means I'm either missing or unsure of a particular bit of information. Again, since I don't have any of these CDs, I cannot guarantee that my information is accurate. If anyone has any of these promo discs and can verify the actual radio edit run times on them, by all means please chime in with your info! Here's the list I've compiled:

Also, does anyone know if the songs listed below have radio edits that are shorter than their commercial single and LP counterparts? Most of the songs below run over 4:30 on their commercial releases and I'm wondering if any of these hits are edited shorter or faded early on a promo DJ single. Conversely, I'd also like to know if any of these songs have definitely never been issued in a shorter radio edit form. I welcome and appreciate anyone who can furnish some information. Here's my list:

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT - TENNESSEE (I've seen an edit on import CD singles with no run time given; haven't been able to find a U.S. promo copy)
DEF LEPPARD - ARMAGEDDON IT
WHITNEY HOUSTON - MY NAME IS NOT SUSAN
JANET JACKSON - PLEASURE PRINCIPLE
JON B - PRETTY GIRL
HAMMER - 2 LEGIT 2 QUIT
MARTIN PAGE - IN THE HOUSE OF STONE AND LIGHT
SELENA - DREAMING OF YOU
SIMPLE MINDS - SEE THE LIGHTS
MICHAEL W. SMITH - I WILL BE HERE FOR YOU
PATTY SMYTH - NO MISTAKES
STEVIE B - IN MY EYES
STEVIE B - LOVE ME FOR LIFE
ROD STEWART - MY HEART CAN'T TELL YOU NO
LUTHER VANDROSS - DON'T WANT TO BE A FOOL
VANILLA ICE - PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC
WHISTLE - ALWAYS AND FOREVER
VANESSA WILLIAMS - DREAMIN'
YO-YO - YOU CAN'T PLAY WITH MY YO-YO

I own a few of those, Todd:

Amy Grant - That's What Love is For (A&M 75021 7233 2) (picture card sleeve)
1. Single Mix (actual 4:20) [45 version]
2. LP Edit (actual 4:00)
3. Extended Single Mix (actual 4:51)
4. LP Version

Amy Grant - I Will Remember You (A&M 75021 7339 2) (picture card sleeve)
1. Rhythm Remix (actual 5:05) [45 version]
2. Album Remix (actual 5:04)
3. Album Version

Amy Grant - Good for Me (A&M 75021 7264 2) (picture card sleeve)
1. 7" Good for You Mix (actual 4:02) [45 version]
2. 7" You Like to Dance Mix (actual 3:48) [45 B-side]
3. LP Version
4. 12" You Like to Dance Mix (actual 5:42)

NOTE: The A-side of ALL the singles from Amy Grant's "Heart in Motion" album, with the exception of "Baby Baby," were remixes. The B-side of the cassette single of "Baby Baby" contained the 7" Heart in Motion Mix, which was the version that was probably most popular on radio. It was commercially released several years later on a reissue CD single of "Baby Baby," which contained it, the 12" Heart in Motion Mix, and Lead Me On (A&M 75021 2397 2).

Michael Jackson - In the Closet (ESK 74266) (steel blue back insert)
1. Radio Edit (actual 4:46 - artwork says 4:29) [45 version]
2. Club Edit (actual 4:08) (actually, this was on the commercial maxi-single)
3. The Mission Radio Edit (actual 4:28) [45 B-side]
4. Club Mix (actual 8:00 - artwork says 7:55)
5. KI's 12" (actual 7:14 - artwork says 6:57)

Michael Jackson - In the Closet (ESK 4537) (dark green back insert)
1. Radio Edit (actual 4:36 -- artwork says 4:16) [edit of Newark Mix]
2. 7" Edit (actual 4:46) [45 version]
3. The Mission Radio Edit (actual 4:28) [45 B-side]
4. KI's 12" (actual 7:14 - artwork says 6:57)
5. The Newark Mix (actual 7:06 - artwork says 6:51)
6. Freestyle Mix (actual 6:32)
7. The Mission (actual 9:23 - artwork says 9:20)

I think I used to have the "Club at the End of the Street" promo, but I think I sold it on Ebay... I seem remember it having a yellow spine with bold black lettering and no front insert. I don't see it around, so I don't think I have it anymore.

All these versions I've listed, with the possible exception of Amy's "Good for Me," were available commercially on import CD singles.

Brian:

Thanks a TON for setting the record straight on the Amy Grant singles and remixes! I've been racking my brain for quite some time trying to figure out the true hit single and radio versions of her hits from the Heart in Motion album! As for the Michael Jackson "In the Closet" promo single on ESK 4537, is the "Newark Mix" Radio Edit a considerably different mix than the 45 version?

And as a Michael Jackson fan, do you also collect Janet Jackson's singles? If so, do you happen to know if a short radio edit exists for "Pleasure Principle"?

Oh, let's see... how would I describe the Radio Edit [aka Newark Mix edit]? It omits the spoken intro, as does the 45 version (though it's present on the extended Newark Mix), and it's a little sparser and smoother than the 45 version, less "popping" and jolting -- know what I mean? It's also got an added deep "bassy" synthesizer line running through the whole thing. (How can you describe these instruments that aren't actual instruments?)

Pleasure Principle -- I'm pretty sure the 4:12 LP edit that's on "Design of a Decade" is the official radio edit. To my knowledge, no remixes were supplied to radio, but...

The US cassette single and the UK 45 both used the 7" Vocal mix, which was a short remix similar to the video mix and extended dance remix. It sadly had NEVER been on CD, and as I said was NOT on the promo 45. (There was no promo CD single, to my knowledge -- strange, since there was for "Diamonds," released about the same time.)

A French Janet Jackson collector told me the 7" Vocal was issued on a Japanese CD3, but I've never seen it, and he didn't own it, so I think he's wrong. I do have a Japan CD3 maxi with Pleasure Principle and two other songs from "Control," so that may be what he's thinking of -- but it's the LP version. (The US 45 used the full-length LP vesion as well.)

Although I don't have the actual promo singles for the following songs, I can supply a bit of info:

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT "TENNESSEE" does have a radio edit that's approximately 3:35.

MARTIN PAGE "IN THE HOUSE OF STONE AND LIGHT" has a version called "Edit" which runs about 4:10.

YO-YO "YOU CAN'T PLAY WITH MY YO-YO" has a radio edit that starts off with Ice Cube's talking and no music behind it. It's mixed slightly different than the LP version and it runs 3:53.

Thanks for the info, aaronk. Do you have a copy of the "You Can't Play with My Yo-Yo" radio edit? I know edtop40 has been searching intensively for it for quite some time.

Brian K: I have a question about the Amy Grant "Every Heartbeat" promo CD single that maybe you can answer. I don't have this promo disc, but I do know the track listing and printed run times:

AMY GRANT - EVERY HEARTBEAT (A&M 75021 7541 2)
1) 7" HEART & SOUL MIX - 3:49
2) 7" BODY & SOUL MIX - 3:50
3) 7" PIANO MIX - 3:30
4) LP VERSION - 3:31
5) 12" BODY & SOUL MIX - 5:21

Am I correct that the 7" Heart & Soul Mix is the 45 version, and the 7" Body & Soul Mix is the 45 B-side and radio edit? I seem to remember the LP version getting a lot of airplay as well.

Yes, I have a copy of "You Can't Play With My Yo-Yo" from a TM Century HitDisc. I don't have the actual promo single, though. To my knowledge, the "Radio Edit" has never been issued on any CD, other than the promo single and the disc from TM Century.

You are correct about what version is which, Todd, though I don't have the promo CD. I got the UK commercial CD single for that one (UPC 0 8283907832 0), which contains:

1. 7" Heart and Soul Mix (actual 3:40)
2. 7" Body and Soul Mix (actual 3:45)
3. 7" Piano Mix (actual 3:22)
4. 12" Body and Soul Mix (actual 5:20, cold ending)

Strangely, the artwork on the import also lists the exact running times you did, some of them ten seconds off what's on the disc!

Now... it's POSSIBLE the running times are different on the promo CD single, because what sometimes happened in the UK and Europe in the early days of CD singles was that they would manufacture what was basically a 5-inch CD3 -- it was full size, but only had a 20-minute playable area. I have at least two UK CD singles where the dance mixes were actually FADED EARLY to accomodate the 20-minute limit. (They are Paula Abdul "Straight Up" and a killer disc of Janet Jackson "Alright" remixes.)

But the "Every Heartbeat" UK CD only runs a little over 16 minutes, so I doubt if that is the case here.

I never did get the promo for "Baby Baby," either. I got the UK CD for that one, too, and it's mislabeled. It claims it contains the No Getting Over You Mix, the Heart In Motion Mix, and Lead Me On (UPC 0 8283906262 6). It actually contains:

1. No Getting Over You Mix (actual 3:59)
2. LP Version [45 version]
3. Lead Me On

A lot of people wouldn't know the difference between the No Getting Over You Mix and the LP Version. They're very similar, but NGOY mix has got some added instrumentation, including an added drum track running through the whole song, and the instrumental break is totally different. The LP version sounds sparser.

The promo single of the Goo Goo Dolls "Name" does contain the "Edit," which cuts the intro in half and, if I remember correctly, shortens the instrumental (guitar) section. The run time should be really close to 4:05. I don't own the single, but I used to play it quite a bit at a radio station that I worked at.

Jeremy Jordan "Wannagirl" promo single does contain the "Radio Edit" which is exactly 3:53.

LaTour "People Are Still Having Sex" (Radio Edit) has a run time of 4:07.

Spin Doctors "Two Princes" (Edit) is 3:28.

Michael W. Smith "I Will Be Here For You" (Edit) runs 4:03.

I didn't notice "My Name is Not Susan" up there, Todd. I have that one too:

My Name Is Not Susan (Arista ASCD-2259), front and back inserts matching cassette single version

1. Album Edit (actual 4:09)
2. U.K. Mix (actual 4:10)
3. Power Radio Mix w/Rap (actual 4:39) [Rap by Monie Love]
4. Power Radio Mix w/o Rap (actual 4:03)

Thanks for the info, Aaron and Brian. Keep up the great work, everyone!

Brian's post has prompted me to wonder if Whitney Houston's "Miracle" was ever made available as a radio edit? My research seems to indicate that the LP, single, and promo version all run 5:41. Does anyone have a promo copy that reflects otherwise?

Really? I was almost positive the single was an edit, the cassette single, at least. I am 99% sure the promo CD single used the LP edit. I don't own that one, but I do have the commercial Japanese CD3, which uses the edit as well. I'll have to check the running time when I get home from work tonight (technically, Saturday morning).

Okay, Todd, the edit version of "Miracle" on the Japanese CD3 runs 4:59. I haven't yet been able to verify what version was on the promo CD, or which version the 45 and cassette single were. But 5:41 would be an unusually long time for a song played on the radio. I can't imagine the promo didn't contain an edit.

Todd,

I just started entering your list of radio edits that have not appeared on cd and came across "Strike It Up" by Black Box. Joel Whitburn does indeed list the running time of this 45 as 3:06 and he lists it as being available on vinyl. I have never seen a vinyl 45 of this song but I do have the cassette single which states a running time of 3:06 for the "radio mix" but when I just timed it on my cassette player it ran 2:59. This speed differential could be just my casssette deck or the physical tape itself so I am curious as to whether the dj cd single really runs 3:06 or not.

Todd,

Regarding your post on Whitney Houston "I Will always Love You", my cd promo Arista ASCD 2490, does not have a radio edit running 3:51 but rather 2 versions of this song, one of which is the LP version running 4:30 and the other is the LP version faded :07 early so it runs 4:23. Are you sure of your catalog number on your 3:51 edit as I cannot imagine Arista issuing two different promo cd's with the same catalog number.

Now with regards to Monifa "Touch It", is the clean radio edit running 3:44 the same as the version appearing on the cd "United States Of Dance" (UTV 314545105) as I currently list that version as running 3:44 also.

With regard to Ralph Tresvant's "Sensitivity" are you sure that the so called "radio edit" runs 5:52 as I don't see how this could be an edit when the LP version runs 4:40. The 10th edition lists a version running 5:52 on the New Edition cd "All The Number Ones" so is that the "radio edit"?

The Ralph Tresvant cut "Sensitivity" is remixed on the New Editon "All The Number Ones" CD. The mix is called the "Warm + Sensitive Mix" and runs 5:53. I also have this song on a TM Century Gold Disc, and the 4:40 version is what they're calling the "hit" version. I don't know of a radio edit, but one may exist.

My promo single of "Touch It" by Monifah (Universal 1328) has the "Clean Radio Edit" running 3:56.
