Pat: This happened to be a personal favorite of mine in '74. My local station, late in its current chart run, switched over to what I believed was the slightly longer LP version. My LP must be at my Mom's; I'll be by soon, and I'll check. But I'm 95% sure on this. Does anybody happen to have that original MGM same-titled LP, with a close-up of his face on the cover? I believe that version ran around (3:54)-ish.

I have the album and timed "Hang On In There Baby" and the track actually runs (3:52) not (3:54) as stated. The 45 and LP timing difference is truly a "version" difference and not a "length" difference.

Thanks, Pat! Now I can actually spend TIME with Mom on my next visit - one I hit "auxiliary storage", I'm usually in there for hours! :) Hey, two seconds off wasn't bad, though, from a memory from 32 years ago....

What are the main diffences in the versions?

Andy: Pat is the expert at that sensitive "length/version" issue, and I will defer to his wisdom here. Pat says this is a 45 version, not a 45 length. To me, it is just an extra pass or two through the ending chorus. I remember an extra long "OOOOOOOOOOH, right there, right there" sung by Johnny featured on the LP version's "extra length." I do not believe an edit is involved - to me, the 45 is simply an early fade.

Evidently, "Hang on in There Baby" is one of those few songs whose LP version has never appeared on a domestic CD release. I too am a fan of the song and am pleasantly surprised to learn of this extended version. Has it ever surfaced on an import CD?

I have a German import CD, on Karussell/Spectrum/Polydor 550 1812, "Hang On In There Baby." But, again, it features the 45 version.

Tonight I had out the Rebound CD "Disco Nights Vol 2 -
The Best Of Disco Funk". This Cd is listed as
"rerecording" in the database and runs (5:07). I did a
little digging and found some additional info. It is
sort of a re-recording....
More specifically it's a remix from 1979 as a duet with
Alton McClain. It was released as a single by "Alton &
Johnny" on Polydor. It was included that year in the
Alton McClain & Destiny LP "More Of You". The version on
the Rebound CD is the 12" single version, and is
incorrectly labeled as by Johnny Bristol.
Note - Johnny had no involvement in this new recording,
It uses his 1974 vocal track, and some of the original
instrumental tracks. They added a new drum track, and
some fresh instruments, including several sax
breaks...and of course Alton's new vocals.

BTW, for years I had Johnny's original version on a
Polydor re-issue 45 and it was the LP version. That's
the one I came to know, and I too am bummed you can't get
it on a CD.

Mark, both fortunately and at long last, the LP version of "Hang On In There
Baby" has made a single appearance on a U.S. CD. And I never would've
known about it were I not a longtime subscriber to Pat's db, since I no longer
keep a close eye on Time/Life CDs, like I did back in the late 80's/90's. Pat
noted that it finally turned up in 2009, from the T/L V/A "Sweet Soul Of The
70's" series, on the 2-CD volume called "Just To Be Close To You." Picked a
copy up online, just for the one version of the one song, as soon as I saw it
listed in the db - very happy to finally own it on CD.

After pulling the CD tonight and playing it, the LP version does clearly
contain two edits later in the song, and is 100% not simply an early fade, as
I'd thought was the case years ago.

Oh thanks, Jim! I hadn't noticed it finally appeared!
