This is something that has been bothering me for over 13 years now. I
have both the promo CD single as well as the commercial CD single and
our local radio station always played a different version. The version I
have is an edit of the "vocal club mix" but there was a totally different
radio version that was played all the time. Does anyone have this or
know of it??

I remember Promo Only included a remix that sampled "Got To Be Real". I don't recall whether that was on any Columbia releases - was this the one?

I'm not sure...I just remember it was only about 4 minutes long and had
the same lyrics. If I had to guess it had something to do with the hip hop
junkies but it's so long ago I can't remember. It had to be a promo only
(not the company) release though.

My promo single has catalog number 6220, and it has 1) C+C Radio Mix and 2) C+C Extended Radio Mix. Unfortunately, it's at my parents' house several states away; however, I do remember it having the vocal "ladies let your body flow," which is a sample of the Nice & Smooth hip-hop track "Hip Hop Junkies." (The vocal is by rapper Gregg Nice, who was also later sampled on the hit "Start The Commotion" by the Wise Guys.)

Here's a link to a song sample of the "Nice & Smooth Hip Hop Remix" (really cool version that I never knew existed until now):

I think that's it! Where the heck did it appear and how do we get it!?

I just got ahold of a crap load of "Promo Only" CDs and would you know
the first disc I have has the mix on it! It's just listed as "remix" but I
finally have it!!! I'm still curious if this apeared on a promo CD
somewhere.

Although this version didn't contain the rap parts of the song and I'm
pretty sure that they were on the radio with this mix back in 1994.

I'm also wondering if a promo CD exists for that mix. Promo Only has occasionally taken songs from vinyl for their discs. That particular mix WAS officially released by Columbia, although it appears to be only on promo 12" with a printed run time of 4:56:

http://www.discogs.com/release/641586

If you listen carefully to your PO CD, does it sound like vinyl? If not, then maybe there were edits of this remix officially released, too. PO's Mainstream series has a 3-minute version "remix," while their Urban series has a just-over-four-minute "remix." It's possible that they dubbed it from vinyl and made their own edits.

I'll have to listen to it again. I'm assuming a promo cd must exist because
back then I think most of the radio stations were only using promo
singles.

Guys, thought I'd jump in here. I have two different promo CD singles for this. The first one appears to be the same as the one both Aaron & Chendagam already have:

C+C Music Factory-"Do You Wanna Get Funky" (CSK 6220)
1-The C+C Radio Mix (listed 3:55; actual 4:01)
2-The C+C Extended Radio Mix (listed & actual 4:29)

I think this is the one that will help clear things up:

C+C Music Factory-"Do You Wanna Get Funky/Got To Be Real" (CSK 6604)
1-Robi-Rob's Hip Hop Junkies Mix (listed & actual 4:10)
2-Robi-Rob's Hip Hop Junkies Mix - No Rap (listed 3:03; actual 3:01)

That's it! Actually it's on Zelma Davis's myspace page:

Someone from C&C's page wrote me back...not sure if it's Rob or not just
yet but maybe they'll clear things up very soon!

How rare is that second CD single? I've never seen it before.

I've acquired a copy that features the "Got To Be Real" samples and runs 4:57. Not sure what version that falls under, as the run time doesn't match what Jim's posted in this thread.

That doesn't match any of the times on the commercial CD single. Any ideas?

If you look at the discogs photo, you'll see that the 12" promo has the 4:57 version. It was also released on an import CD in 2000, but I can't find a copy of that disc for sale. (If anyone else would like to try his luck, the 2-disc set is called The Ultimate R&B Collection, Vol. 2 on WEA International.)

So, it appears I now own a dub of the 12". Question though... is the Robi-Rob's Hip Hop Junkies Mix and the Nice & Smooth Remix the same remix?

Why is it so hard to find these releases? I've never seen them for sale anywhere in the past 13 years.

Yes, I believe they are one in the same, but just labeled differently. At the very least, they both contain the "Got To Be Real" sample and run the same length. I'm only drawing my conclusion based on those facts.

Are you referring to the promo CD or the import collection? Obviously, all promo CDs are printed in very limited quantities. Furthermore, there are relatively few radio people who are collectors like Jim and me. Most music directors and program directors just throw CDs in the trash that their station is not going to play. Yes, it makes me sick to think that hundreds and thousands of those things were just tossed away, but that's the sad truth.

Oh I understand why but it's just certain promos that are really, really
hard to fine. Then there are those like the new NIN "capital G" sngle that
cost $75 on ebay...come on.

It is a shame that all that stuff got tossed. There is one promo CD in
particular that I can't fine anywhere...Cause & Effect's "inside out." I was
able to borrow a copy to rip it back in the late 90s but man it's impossible
to find. And to think a bunch of them were tossed.
