From one of Todd's terrific posts from 2005, I learned that there was a "Radio Edit" of this song:

MARIAH CAREY - I DON'T WANNA CRY (Radio Edit – 4:25) (Columbia CSK 73743)

I figured out the edit points, using the full CD Mariah Carey (Columbia CK 45202, 1990, runs 4:48) for the LP version, and a TM Century CD for the edit:

Keep 0:00.0-0:19.2 of LP version.
Edit on snapping sound.
Remove two beats (yes, just two beats) from 0:19.2-0:21.0.
Keep 0:21.0-1:43.3 of LP version.
Edit on kick drum before tamborine hit/snap.
Remove the 8 beats from 1:43.3-1:50.7.
Keep 1:50.7-3:52.7 of LP version.
Edit at beginning of word "given" - not on a beat.
Remove the 8 beats from 3:52.7-4:00.0 - the 8 beats from one "given" to the next "given".
Keep 4:00.0-4:18.6 of LP version.
Edit on downbeat.
Remove the 16 beats from 4:18.6-4:33.3.
Keep 4:33.3-4:48.9 (end) of LP version.

Your mixdown will run about 4:16 (4:17.6 with outro silence), with edits at 0:19.2, 1:41.5, 3:43.5 and 4:02.1.

This is significantly shorter than the printed time on the promo single - can anyone confirm the actual time of the promo single?

FYI - My commercial 45 has a printed time of 4:47 and is the LP version.

Ron:

Pat's database states that DJ copies of this song ran 4:25.

How in the hell do you do that last edit, or should it sound as choppy as what I'm coming up with, LOL!

Thanks for this info, btw.

Actually, help. Oh please.

Edit on kick drum before tamborine hit/snap.
Remove the 8 beats from 1:43.3-1:50.7.

Should it sound as though she belches? Before the cut she's already sliding in for a bonus pass of "I don't wanna cry..." leaving "eeehhhhrrr..." just before the edit.

Actually, just looked this up on You Tube, and it appears this edit is also the video version. All four edit points match, though if this matches the edit on the promo CD, it sounds as though some "crossfades" were used on the second and fourth cuts.

Glad it all worked out... still don't know why the TM edit is shorter than the reported promo CD single edit...

I actually went and listened to the video on YouTube as well...the last edit was tricky for me, too, so the video was a help.

Guys, I'm finally back up and running, and I will be catching up on all I've missed as quickly as I can, so please be patient with me. Here's the particulars for my promo CD single for this, which featured no listed times:

Mariah Carey-"I Don't Wanna Cry" (CSK 73743)
1-Radio Edit (actual time 4:18)
2-Album Version (actual time 4:48)

Ron:

According to Jim's post, the TM edit matches his promo CD single, and as Aaron has mentioned on occasion, it's possible TM Century used the promo single.
