I'm sure this will be in the next edition of the book, but the 45 version of Pointer Sisters' "Automatic" is on 2004's Platinum & Gold Collection - The Pointer Sisters. The 45 version of Neutron Dance still seems to be MIA, though.

Brian:
I have the 45 version of The Pointer Sisters' "Automatic" on the Platinum & Gold Collection CD and I notice it sounds so much brighter and punchier than the LP version on the Fire - Very Best of CD set (RCA 66863). Do you know if the actual 45 was punchy and bright like this as well, or is this more likely the result of the mastering engineer jacking up the song's high end on the Platinum & Gold disc?

I couldn't tell you, sorry... I just presumed it was the 45 version from the running time.

Does anyone know if the UK "Now 1984" 2 disc compilation includes the correct 45 version of "Automatic"? The running time is about right. Calling out to Ron, who I believe owns several of the "Now 1980s" comps... ;-)

The version on Now 1984 runs 3:58 and is the correct 45 mix (there are some really dreadful alternate mixes out there). This appears to be consistent with the "LP length" comments for the other CDs.
I do have the 45 somewhere in the basement, but I don't think I'll be able to find it tonight. Do you need any more info other than the length and the mix?

Thanks, Ron! I think you told me everything I need to know. Just wanted to be sure I had the correct 45 version on CD.

I have a Canadian stock Planet 45 rpm disc with the edit on it. I have never noticed this cut to have an overly bright EQ. Sounds similar to the LP version to my ears; just edited.

I, too, always thought the 45 was just an edit of the LP.
