I don't know whether or not the following information needs to be mentioned in the 10th edition of T40MOCD, but it might be useful to those who like to collect TV themes on CD. In 1976, Barry DeVorzon & Perry Botkin Jr.'s "Nadia's Theme (The Young and the Restless)" was released as a commercial single and became a major Top 40 hit. To date, the only CD appearance of the hit single version is on the Hard to Find Orchestra Instrumentals II (Eric 11518) disc.
But back around 1973, DeVorzon & Botkin Jr. composed a different recording of "Nadia's Theme" that was made exclusively for the TV daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless and remains the show's main theme to this day. The complete TV soundtrack version can be found on a various artist CD called Soap Opera's Greatest Love Themes (Scotti Bros. 75234-2) with a run time of 3:22. This CD is a bit of an oddity though because there are no specific artist credits listed for any of the songs and most of the soap themes are not the original recordings. But I can assure everyone that "Nadia's Theme" on this disc was composed by DeVorzon & Botkin Jr. and is the TV soundtrack version, which is different than the 1976 hit version.

I remember hearing an alternate version of "Nadia's Theme" in 1976 that was exactly like the single version except that it had 4 extra notes at the end of the song and was probably 2 seconds longer as a result. I've never found this version on any 45, LP or CD. Is anyone familiar with this version? Todd, could this be the version you are talking about?

No, the TV soundtrack version of "Nadia's Theme" is a different recording altogether. It has a faster tempo and consists of a different instrumental arrangement than the hit 45 version. Also, the full TV soundtrack version has a run time of 3:22, as opposed to the commercial 45 which runs 2:50.

Let me shed some light on this issue. The tune originated in the film Bless the Beasts and Children, along with Carpenters' recording of the title song. On the O.S.T. LP, what became known as "Nadia's Theme (The Young and the Restless)" was then titled "Cotton's Dream," with a running time of 1:57.
After Nadia Comaneche used the piece of music during her routine in the 1976 Olympics, A&M re-edited the song, dragging the playing time out to 2:50 by repeating the 2nd chorus. On the 45, the splice stuck out like a sore thumb, as it was quite abrupt. When remastering the song for release on the ERIC Records reissue, we split the song into two pieces, using a multitrack with the first half of the song as tracks 1 and 2, and the tacked-on repeat of the second chorus as tracks 3 and 4. This allowed us to crossfade instead of splice, making the extended ending seam undetectable.
As for various versions, the A&M O.S.T. LP, Bless the Beasts and Children contains exactly the same recording as the 45 entitled "Nadia's Theme" except that on the soundtrack LP there's no repeat of the 2nd chorus.

It's great to have you on Pat's message board. I've long appreciated the high quality audio engineering work you've contributed to the ERIC CD releases in addition to some of your other independent mastering projects.
Just to add my two cents to your post, you are indeed correct that "Nadia's Theme" originated in the film Bless the Beasts and Children and was then titled "Cotton's Theme". (EdisonLite, does this original LP version sound like a description of the version you recall?) It's my understanding Columbia Pictures approached Perry Botkin, Jr. a couple years later about reworking the song for a new soap opera at the time called The Young and the Restless. As I mentioned earlier, this reworked version still airs on the TV soap today and can be found on the Soap Opera's Greatest Love Themes CD.
Then of course Romanian gymnist Nadia Comaneci used a slower, slightly more melancholy version of the song for her gymnastic routines in the 1976 summer olympics. As you accurately point out, Tom, this version was extended for commercial single release by looping the second chorus. For some reason, Barry DeVorzon's name was dropped from early pressings of the single, leaving Botkin, Jr. to receive the entire performing artist credit. Considering DeVorzon co-wrote the song with Botkin, he was understandably upset by this and successfully sued his record label for proper artist credit, back royalties, and damages.
Evidently, there are at least three different versions of "Nadia's Theme" recorded by DeVorzon and Botkin, Jr. We can all agree though that the correct hit single version is the one found on the Hard to Find Orchestra Instrumentals II (Eric 11518) CD.
