some notes regarding the 3 deep purple top 40 songs

"hush" has a stated run time of 4:11 but actually runs 4:17.....45 is in mono....
"kentucky woman" has a stated run time of 3:57 and actually runs 3:57 while your database says the run time of the 45 version is 4:12.........the 45 version IS just an early fade of the "very best" cd version faded to 3:57....both are mono....
"smoke on the water" has TWO edited versions on the 45......the lower matrix number has the 3:48 edited version from the cd/lp "machine head" while the b side with the higher matrix number has the edited version running 4:34 and comes off the cd/lp made in japan.........

Hmmm... Could we perhaps be looking at two different commercial 45 versions of "Kentucky Woman"?

(And is it any wonder why my "45 versions wanted on CD" list never gets any smaller!)

At the risk of dragging this off-topic because the song I'm going to ask about was top 60 (but I didn't think a new topic was justified):

Does anybody know the actual length and edit points (or a CD source, if it was remixed) for the DJ edit of "Knocking At Your Back Door" from the 1984 album "Perfect Strangers?"

The label claims a 3:59 DJ edit and a 5:39 "AOR edit."

I am specifically interested in the 7" single / radio edits (which I believe are one and the same).

For reference, the album version is listed at 7 minutes, give or take about 10 seconds.

Just out of curiosity, which version of this was the "hit"? ISTR the studio version being the designated plug side on the promo, but most stations around here (Boston area) played the live version during the song's chart run. Classic rock stations today seem divided on which version they play, with a slight edge to the live one.

I am also looking forward to the responses on your question. My guess is it was pretty much split-down-the-middle as to which version got the most airplay.

I do know that the TM Stereo Rock automated format played a custom-edited studio version, while some stations played the live edit because 'Made In Japan' was their current (hot) album, and 'Machine Head' was well over a year old.

Also, some Top-40 stations typically hated to play live recordings in general...

My memory of the "Smoke On The Water" which-side-was-the-hit question is a little fuzzy, probably due to having three local top-40s at the time while simultaneously playing it on the college station. But ISTR the live version getting the lion's share of the spins in the Twin Cities.

Steve: Yep, the studio side of the DJ 45 was starred, but not the live side.

Andy: I think you nailed it regarding Made In Japan having been the hotter LP at the time. Back when two albums a year was the norm for most acts, Warners had released both the (Purple Passages) Tetragrammaton compilation and Who Do We Think We Are! in the span of the year between Machine Head and Made In Japan and the success of the latter in all likelihood spurred the label's decision to release "Smoke" as a single. As such, it always struck me as odd why the label designated the edit of the older studio track as the plug side, top-40 preferences for studio tracks notwithstanding.

But give Warners credit for including both versions on the DJ 45: it allowed each station to choose which side was the better fit and it allowed Warners to maximize sales for both of the parent LPs.

Which, in turn, paved the way for the reissue of the "Woman From Tokyo" single from some five months earlier.

FWIW, the classic rock stations around here (Milwaukee) almost always play the studio version.
