Does anyone know how to get the 3:55 dj version of "Shadow Dancing"? Is it simply a fade, or an edit (and if so, what is edited)?

I checked my dj copy of the 45 this afternoon. One side is 3:55 as you mentioned, but is listed on the label as 4:12. The other side is also listed as 4:12, but is actually 4:31. The short version is a fade of the long version. There are no edits, and the fade begins at 3:45 and fades out at 3:55. I did notice that the short version is mixed a little hotter than the longer version.

OK, so if I understand correctly, you just fade the album version, starting at 3:45 and ending at 3:55 (and it might be a little hotter). Is that right? Thanks.

That's true for the short version compared to the long version on the DJ 45. I don't have the album or cd versions to compare those.

No mix differences on this one; it's just an early fade the LP length. I think the "hotter" sound that Kerry is referring to could be that the short side is pressed louder than the long side.

Yes, the hotter sound on the short side is level, not equalization or remix.

Are there two different dj 45's issued for "Shadow Dancing"? My copy is RSO 893 with matrix number RS-893-AM-CT1 which is the mono side with a stated time of (3:35) but actual running time of (3:55) and RS-893-AS-CT2 which is the stereo side with a stated running time of (4:12) but actual running time of (4:32).

There probably isn't another dj 45 of "Shadow Dancing". Based on your matrix number info, my dj 45 is identical to yours except for the labels. The label for the long stereo version is on both sides of my 45:
       

I'd guess this was a pressing plant mistake...

The first CD to include "Shadow Dancing" was Polydor's Andy Gibb greatest hits album from 1991. It runs 4:29 here, and sounds excellent - excellent dynamic range, very good EQ, no traces of noise reduction, and seemingly very low-generation source tapes. It's no wonder that a bunch of others use the same analog transfer:
  • Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 38 Celebration (1994; mastered too loud and clips a bit)
  • Razor & Tie's 2-CD Super '70s (1995; shortens the tail of the fade)
  • Time-Life's AM Gold Vol. 25 1978 (1997; digitally exactly 1 dB quieter)
  • Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 46 '70s Dance Party 1978-1979 (1997; differently-EQ'd digital clone)
I have just one compilation that isn't based on Andy Gibb. Sessions/Warner Special Products' 2-CD Ultimate Party Album (1992) runs three seconds longer, at 4:32, and has a differently shaped fade than Andy Gibb. Based on the timing, I'd guess that Ultimate probably uses the same analog transfer as Polydor's Shadow Dancing disc (just a guess). Overall, I prefer the sound on Andy Gibb.

The promo 45 is an early fade of the LP/commercial 45 version. Add a 32-beat fade, downbeat to downbeat on the word "Do", from 3:36.1 to 3:54.6 of the LP/commercial 45 version (using the timings from Andy Gibb).

Full disclosure: I recreated Aaron's recreation of the promo 45 version.

I used a sinusoidal fade, which matched the shape of Aaron's fade, as well as the start/end points for the fade.

I wholeheartedly trust Aaron's work, so I'd bet my dollar on the 32-beat fade from 3:36 to 3:54, rather than the 16-beat fade from 3:45 to 3:54.

It's hard to pinpoint the exact point when the song begins fading, but it's probably somewhere in between 3:36 and 3:45---like around 3:40. In any case, my version was creating using Jim's promo 45 dub as a guide, and I always try to re-create the fades exactly as they are on the vinyl.
