I came across an interesting promo for "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks:
DPRO 7087 6 12067 2 2
1. Bitchless Edit (listed 3:58; actual 4:06)
This edit simply mutes the vocal when she sings the word "bitch."
Pat mentions in the database that DJ copies run 3:58 and 4:11. The only other promo CD single I have is a 1-track (DPRO 7087 6 12014 2 0) and has only the "Edit" version with a printed and actual time of 3:58.
Is there a third promo CD with the full-length LP version?

I reckon not many stations played this version.

My copy is the one-track 3:58 version. This is the version
we played on the air.
Wasn't aware there was a "clean" version of this. While I
was a bit surprised at how big of a hit this became, the
muted edit sounds like it would detract too much from the
song.
I always referred to it as the "big bad B-word song" on the
air.

I wasn't aware of the clean version either until I came
across the promo on Discogs while adding things to my
collection. The edit is smooth sounding and doesn't
necessarily detract from the song. Despite it being the
title, she actually only sings the word four times in
the entire song.

I have both the edited version and the bitch version on cd single. Walmart
carried the edited version. I remember buying it there and being disappointed
that the word bitch was edited out and the song sounded weird without it. The
other music stores carried the bitch version.

That's interesting, Ron! What's the catalog number of the Walmart/edited version?

I don't shop at Walmart at all just in principle. They treat their employees as if they were sub-humans.

I still don't get the logic of censoring the word bitch. At that rate you might as well censor Elton's The Bitch Is Back! I get curse words and profanity, but bitch is neither. Nor is damn.

Universal Records issued a 4-track promo CD Maxi single for Sophie Ellis-Bextor's "Murder On The Dancefloor", which includes a Clean Version mix.

Clearly, you've never worked in radio, especially in a
small and/or conservative market where you have to watch
it with lyrics.
Remember, in 1974 Elton John was as hot as an artist
could be, and could get away with it. Meredith Brooks
was a one-hit wonder, though to be fair I've never heard
the "clean version" of her song...we were never serviced
with it.
At the station I worked at in 1974, it was made very
clear by management that we were not to give the title on
air, only the artist, and if we wished mention that it
was from his "Caribou" album.

Neil Sedaka got away with the "B-word" in Bad Blood (with
Elton John on prominent backing vocal) in 1975. Radio
also had no problem with "Rich Girl" by Hall Oates in
1977. Seems like people were generally less uptight about
such things back then, especially if it was as catchy as
those songs were.

There was a local adult oriented music station back in
1977 that aired a special edited version of "Rich Girl"
they received from WWWE in Cleveland. They edited in
"You're A Rich Girl" for each instance of "It's A Bitch
Girl."
I still receive clean radio edits from my current music
service (Promo Only) and have other Xtra Clean Edits from
my many years receiving TM Prime Cuts. One of Prime Cuts
edits on "Hollaback Girl" completely mutes the word 'shit'
in the song. The regular clean version left the 'sh' part
intact.

This promo CD Singles was actually under the title of:
"Bitch (Nothing In Between)"
In Australia, the song was released under that title, which is hilarious, since most Aussies curse worse than a drunken sailor.

Keep in mind that this was before the Janet Jackson
Superbowl incident where individual tv stations got fined
by the FCC for allowing her "wardrobe malfunction" to go
over the air (even though they had no idea it was
coming).
Stations got a lot more paranoid about airing material
with questionable language after that.
I believe around the same time the Canadian counterpart
of the FCC got very strict about language/content too.

Aaron thanks for letting me hear it. Takes all the fun out of the song removing the Bitch part if anyone is curious.
