Hi everyone :)
Well Someday certainly charted. It was a Hot 100 Singles #1 for Mariah Carey.
Ever since #MC30, I assumed I finally got what "happened" at the time with two different mixes of it, but I'd really like to know if others arrive to the same conclusion... or not.

Now this is the thing. After checking all of the "Someday" singles on Discogs, you'll realize these two particular mixes appear on many of them:

Pianoapercapella - New (4:17)

Pianoapercaloopapella (4:14)

Now... I have both of those releases and I swear I cannot hear any difference between them.

I spent years asking other fans, and getting other editions of that single. Up to #MC30 I assumed it was indeed a pressing mistake (you're welcome to prove me wrong, that's why I'm posting this!).

When the #MC30 single of "Someday" was released on digital platforms, some realized there was something... different. The "Pianoapercaloopapella" version played... a different version!

Strange enough soon that version was withdrawn from all digital platforms and replaced with the version we knew for 30 years (named "Pianoapercapella-New" & "Pianoapercaloopapella" on physical format singles).

So... should we assume they failed to properly release it at the time, not realizing they were releasing one single mix with two different names?

Or you think that maybe they didn't release at the time and withdrawn it now for a reason?

Or... there really were 3 released versions in 1990 and I haven't found the difference between them (and the #MC30 one would be a 3rd one?).

All right... this might be a bit confusing, lol.

All I can say in my defense is my native language isn't english, but spanish :)

Any input, information, opinion will be highly appreciated!
Best!

Well there are certainly two versions of it, I must admit I hadn't heard the version with the backbeats until MC30 so I bought the digital download, but you're right that version has now disappeared and been replaced with the "old" version.

I think you're right in that the Pianoapercapella / Pianoapercaloopapella are two different mixes but the names were mixed up at the time. That would be why the UK 12" had the track named the Pianoapercaloopapella while the US MAXI CD had the same mix but named as the Pianoapercapella.

What was missing (and I am most annoyed about) from MC30 was the video mix which played a diffent Jackswing mix to the 7" and 12" versions that were released!

Thanks so much for your input on this, @75azabache!
Noone I've known in almost 30 years ever stated those 2 versions existed, but just one with 2 different names.
Yes, my guess is they got confused, or cancelled the release of one of those mixes, which ended up being released as part of #MC30, and then withdrawn. Still, after playing that track many times now, I can't find anything wrong with it.
Who knows...
As for the videos, I remember the 12" mix one (which is the one that was commercially released). I'm not sure about the other one. I remember Promo Only released a copy of it, replacing its audio for the album version. But that wouldn't qualify as official. I should check my "vault" to see other versions I might have.
Something similar happens with the C&C remix of "Anytime you need a friend" video. ETV Network issued one that lasts 10:56, which I think it's the "C&C Club Mix" (and actually has unseen footage), and the "Video Edit" (6:09) version, featured on this Promo CD
And I'm pretty sure the commercially released one was edited/shortened to fit the "Fantasy: Mariah Carey at Medison Square Garden" Home Video release, which had a 60 min limitation according to laserdisc's one side CLV standards: Fantasy: Mariah Carey At Madison Square Garden

So, 3 versions there. Plus the Album version. Plus the #MC30 released (previously unreleased) "Soul Convention Remix"

Yes, 5 different promotional videos (for her first single that didn't even reach the Top Ten - her first not to achieve that).

Back to that #MC30 "Someday" mix that now is gone, really curious about the reason/s why it was withdrawn.

Oh, you're right! Yet another remix (exclusive to that music video). I didn't pay attention to the music videos on youtube. Just the audio releases. Interesting.

That sounds like the New 7" Jackswing Mix in the video. It
can be found on this release:

I must have bought the MC30 download after they switched
the Pianopercapella mix back, because I'm not hearing a
difference. What is the difference between them?

Completely different mix. Compare that video mix to the New 7" Jackswing from 6 seconds onwards and you should pick it up immediately. The video mix has extra instrumentation.
A longer version of the video also exists which features the New 12" Jackswing mix. It was released on the First Vision VHS in 1991.

The Pianoapercapella is acapella to 30 seconds then the piano accompaniment starts.

The Pianoapercaloopapella is acapella to 13 seconds then percussion starts and the piano kicks in at 31 seconds.

I'm happy to send you a copy of which ever one you don't have if you'd like to compare them.

I version from the video you mentioned, @75azabache, has
never been released on any format (except the video
itself).
As for the withdrawn "Pianapercapella" or
"Pianoapercaloopella" version, I wonder what's the reason
it wasn't released in 1990, and it was withdrawn less
than a week after its release as part of the #MC30
campaign.
They replaced it on youtube for the one we've had for 30
years. Easy to see. The original video containing the
unreleased mix was deleted, and replaced. But the
replacing happened later, so it's the only mix that isn't
"organized" like the rest of them. (see it's in the
middle of the "Butterfly" era mixes and the "#1's" era
mixes):

Between

Mariah Carey - Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise) (Fly Away
Club Mix - Official Audio)
and
Mariah Carey - I Still Believe (Stevie J. Explicit Remix
- Official Audio) ft. Mocha, Amil

I see the only digital releases are laserdiscs and a Japan
DVD. Only the extended version of "Someday" is on these
releases. Was the short version of the video with the
exclusive mix ever released on home video?

Looks like iTunes has both versions. Anyone purchase
them? How is the audio quality?

Thanks! Yeah, I've never heard that one before. Isn't it
interesting when they accidentally release an unreleased
version? They did that with the DualDisc for Michael
Jackson "Remember the Time"... what they used for the
single mix had was actually a previously unreleased edit of
the Main Mix.

@chendagam

"Was the short version of the video with the

No.
Not sure if the iTunes one is the same as the video. Have
not checked. I did extract the audio from the video from
Tidal though, to have it in lossless format (if not
mistaken - I should check that out).

@75azabache
I bought the original release on Qobuz, so I have both
versions.
Cool they didn't block that channel from having the
withdrawn version online for anyone to listen to.
Still wondering why it wasn't released at the time, and
why it was withdrawn instead of just adding the missing
one.
