I think this did not quite make it into the top 40 but
after spending some time researching, I think asking this
board would generate the best answer. This track was a b-
side to "Hey Lover" and did receive a video back at the
time of it's release. The video that aired on MTV was
clean. Does anyone know if this clean version was
released? Thanks!

Maybe the clean version of the Mr. Smith CD? (It's on the promo 12", but I assume you're looking for CD.)

Thanks Aaron I missed the clean version CD in the list on
Discogs. I'll pick one up and post my findings.
Hopefully it is not simply a reversal of the choice words.

I placed an order for it last week, and it's supposed to be here sometime late this week. If you want to wait until I get my copy, I can report if the version on there matches the music video.

The clean CD arrived today, and it has sound effects in place of the bad words on the "I Shot Ya" (Remix). It's the same ones as in the YouTube video, but I don't know if the promo 12" is edited in the same way.

Thanks Aaron. I ordered one too...for only $1.92 I could
not pass it up. I remember MTV simply muted the bad words
with the instrumental playing underneath. Looks like I
may need to create my own (I hate sound effects). I think
MTV used to get the acappella on ch. 1 and the
instrumental on ch. 2 and could do whatever they wanted
with it (just my guess of course).

I don't remember the video from went it first came out, but there is a music video on YouTube with the clean version but has sound effects. The music does continue to play when the vocal drops out, but there are added sounds on top.

I could be mistaken. Now I have to dig up my old MTV VHS
Tapes :)

On the fly edit: I found a low quality .wmv from my MTV
VHS tapes on my hard drive. It does have the sound
effects! My memory must be going. Thanks for all your
help guys!

I just did a comparison between the clean video on YouTube and the clean LP version. It's not possible to edit the longer version down to match the short one. There are a couple edit points where they must've used the multi-track to remove vocals from the mix in order to make the edit sound smooth. It's too bad this wasn't released on a single somewhere, because it's a really well-done edit.

I did not even realize the video version was an edit.
This is one of those rare cases were the b-side received a
video. I always felt this was one of the stronger tracks
from the Mr. Smith LP.

Too bad the video version wasn't released on 12" or on CD
single.

What's the shorter version on some 12" singles running 3:51?

That's the album version (or clean album version).

I wonder if it was released on 12"

https://www.discogs.com/release/2115506-LL-Cool-J-Hey-
Lover-I-Shot-Ya

No times listed and I do not own it. Would the shorter
version be able to be recreated using the instrumental?

My guess is that the promo 12" has the full clean version (same as clean CD), but I don't know for sure. It seems like they would've labeled it something like "Remix Radio Edit" and not just "Clean Remix" if it were the short version. Unfortunately, the short version cannot be created using the instrumental either. You can come close but it wouldn't be exact.
