Originally a low charting album hit in 2016, it was put out again in late 2022. The reason why I am posting is because in 2023 the remix version with Ariana Grande hit #1.

So which is the one Billboard is considering the hit, the solo version without Ariana or the one with it. The non-Ariana version did hit the top 10 before the remix.

The reason I ask is because sometimes the answer is clear cut in cases like this where the remix gets the song to #1 (S & M when Britney joined in for example).

Personally I've went with the remix as that is the one that is playing on the radio where I am. Am I wrong?

I think that you are right. It went to #1 because Ariana
was added to the track (remix). Regardless, both the
original and remix versions can be considered hit versions.

I agree with Jason. As a solo hit, I think it was at 5 or 4 as its highest
position (certainly a hit song as a solo hit), then Ariana was added and it
jumped to #1. From the point of view of what was played on the radio, I
think both would be considered hits. But in terms of the version that made it
peak higher (in this case #1), then that would be the hit version.

Similar to the solo version of Ashe's "Moral of the Story" - it was doing well
on the Hot 100, but then Niall Horan of One Direction was added, and I think
the next week it got even higher.

We should start a thread of songs that did better when an artist was added
:)

Despacito got even bigger when Bieber was added.
