In recent years I've been investigating the charts other than Billboard that have come and gone over the years -- Cash Box, Record World. But for some reason few seem to know that Variety magazine compiled their own singles chart for years.

In fact, Variety created the very first record sales chart, beginning in 1929, a monthly chart ranking the top six bestsellers for each of the three major labels, divided by region (Los Angeles, New York, Chicago).

Variety published its last monthly chart in March 1937, perhaps because Billboard had begun publishing a weekly chart (again separated by label) in 1936. Later, Billboard would create the first merged singles sales chart in July of 1940.

Variety reinstated its charts in 1947, this time Bilboard-style -- ranked by individual record, with separate charts for sales and airplay. (But with a much smaller sample size than Billboard. They appear to have polled less than 20 retailers nationwide.) These continued until the early '60s, when Variety came up with its own Hot 100-style airplay/sales chart called T.I.P.S. -- Tune Index of Popular Songs, which ran until 1971, when the chart was once again discontinued.

Then in the January 21, 1976 issue of Variety, a new chart debuted: "50 Best-Selling Pop Singles." The new chart polled the top 25 U.S. markets and, unlike the three other chart publications (Billboard, Cash Box, and Record World), was COMPLETELY sales based.

The chart had existed (though unpublished) since at least September 17, 1975, because in the debut the "weeks on chart" column listed some records as having been on the chart as long as 18 weeks. (Man, I would love to get hold of these unpublished charts.) The 50 Best-Selling Pop Singles chart ran in its original form for six years, then was suddenly changed to a top-ten-only listing, though it remained sales-based.

One unique feature of those first six years was the chart's Relative Sales Index column, which listed "the relative sales power between any two discs," displayed as a percentage. Ever wonder just how far the #2 hit was behind the #1? It was right there on the chart every week.

So, with Pat's permission, I'm posting the peak position and date, by year, for every song that made the top twenty on Variety's Best-Selling Pop Singles chart. (Hey, I'm certainly not transcribing all 50 positions!) Obviously, after the chart dropped to 10 positions in Febrary 1982, I can only list the top ten.

I'll list them "Whitburn style," by peak position and weeks at peak position, but ties will just be in random order. I'm not going figure out "weeks in top five," etc.

I'll list the magazine issue date, then in parentheses the actual chart week ending date, which was always nine days before the issue date. (I know that because Variety's year-end charts used the actual week-ending dates.)

And I'm dividing each year by the chart date, not the issue date, so songs that peaked prior to January 10th will be listed under the previous year.

Every year I'll highlight a "shocker" -- a single that charted at least ten positions higher than it did on the Hot 100... working up to the biggest "shocker" of all: a 1981 single that hit #9 in sales, but didn't even make the Top 40 in Billboard! How interesting -- and slighly disturbing -- to see the adverse effect that radio could have on a single that sold extremely well.

In this first post, as a teaser, I'll list a handful of songs that peaked in 1975. This info is taken from the "two weeks ago" column of the debut chart and from the 1975 holdovers on the 1976 year-end chart. What a surprise to see the EIGHT-WEEK reign of "Convoy" at #1! It was already in its fifth week at the top in the debut chart -- with total weeks on chart listed as eight! As you'll see, that is one telltale sign of a sales-based chart: novelty and instrumental singles consistently chart much higher than on an airplay/sales chart.

The year-end chart referenced the date that each record attained its highest rank on the Relative Sales Index, not the date they first hit their peak positions, so that is the date used for most of these 1975 hits. (They could have peaked on the RSI before or after they hit their peak position -- it did happen.)

Variety's Best-Selling Singles of 1976
The Complete Top Fifty

Shockers: The #9 national sales rank of Red Sovine's Teddy Bear and #11 rank of Jimmy Dean's I.O.U. -- country novelty singles that barely cracked the top forty on the Hot 100's airplay/sales combo.

Other surprises:

--The #2 ranking of Nadia's Theme, which only made #8 on the Hot 100.

--The low #10 ranking of The Miracles' Love Machine, which hit #1 in Billboard, Cash Box, and Record World. According to an Internet source, it only hit #11 airplay in Radio & Records, so that one is an anomaly. With very few exceptions, almost all other discrepancies between Variety sales and the Hot 100 can be explained by airplay.

--The meager #23 sales ranking of Junk Food Junkie, a song that hit #9 in Billboard – surprising, since novelty songs usually do much better in sales than airplay, as upcoming charts will show.

God help me, but I went ahead and updated the chart with the whole top fifty. I figured it would be of more use to people to see some songs that were top forty sellers, but not Top 40 in Cash Box or Billboard. Also, I kept making mental notes of songs by very popular artists that only charted 41-50, till I finally said, "Oh, hell, why not just do the whole damn thing?"

Of course, this means it'll be longer between posts, up to two weeks, possibly. But I'm already well into 1977 and should have that by next weekend.

One or two songs could be missing -- no chart was published the first week of January, and while the "previous week" column always did show the unpublished data, when you get into the mid-#30s and #40s, that's where songs start just dropping off the chart... and if a song has dropped off the chart, they of course aren't going to list its previous week's position.
