If I'm not mistaken, the short version of "Touch of Grey" on your promo CD single is the same as the 45 version, which has been issued on a number of CDs. However, a quick check of the database shows the 45 version runs :03-:04 short on most of these CDs, so I would be interested in a wave file dub of your promo.

Right, apparently copies that run 4:31 fade early...my copy definitely doesn't fade before 4:33, but the end part of the fade is very low....i still believe it may be the true single version. I did send out the file to you, have you had a chance to review it yet?

Thanks, Tom, for sending the file... I've had a chance to review it and, as I suspected, the short version of "Touch of Grey" on your promo CD single is indeed identical to the 45 version. Both run 4:33.

I've also conducted an A/B comparison between the aforementioned promo CD single track and the 45 version appearing on the Entertainment Weekly Greatest Hits 1987 (Buddha 99713) CD. The latter disc fades out :04 sooner than the true 45 length. As a result, the verse "we will get by" is heard a total of three times prior to the full fadeout on the promo CD/vinyl 45, but only two times on the Entertainment Weekly CD.

On a side note, I agree that "Touch of Grey" is a great record and still rate it as one of the most unexpected chart surprises ever. After all, the Grateful Dead had never really been a commercial band and was primarily known for its huge cult following in the '60s and '70s. So if someone had told me at the start of 1987 that the Dead was suddenly going to score its first ever Top 10 single later that year, I almost certainly would've thought that person was insane!

A few, actually :o) Collectables records issued a series of Elvis reissues on grey vinyl sometime in the 90's....

Actually, though, the first copy of Touch Of Grey that I owned (and still own) was on black vinyl... i got my grey vinyl copy later on. The black vinyl copy didn't come with the fold out poster sleeve.

Thanks for compiling this list Aaron--there were a few I didn't know existed!

I do have two promo CDs that were not on the list:

Sammy Hagar - Give To Live Geffen PRO-CD-2750, 1 track, with listed time of 4:21 (comes in cardboard digipak case with full color photo and graphics)

Go West - Don't Look Down - The Sequel Chrysalis CDS 4, this is a 3" cd single that includes two additional tracks (the title track has a listed time of 4:20), it comes in a plain cardboard sleeve that reads:
Go West
CD SINGLE
Don't Look Down (The Sequel)
From the LP,
DANCING ON THE COUCH
FOR PROMOTION ONLY

looking through my library i did find one that was NOT on
your list but it's says made in england.....don't know if
that disqualifies it for inclusion, but i will outline
the specifics anyway.....boston 'can'tcha say (you belive
in me)' issued as dmca 1150 and contains the below..
1-can'tcha say (you believe in me)/still in love (5:13
listed; 5:13 actual)
2-the launch: a) countdown, b) ignition, c) third stage
seperation (2:56 listed; 2:56 actual)
3-cool the engines (4:23 listed; 4:23 actual)
4-can'tcha say (you believe in me)/still in love (4:11
listed; 4:11 actual)

jonathan butler 'lies' issued as jive c141 and contains the
below tracks...
1-lies (7" version) (4:39 listed; 4:38 actual)
2-baby please don't take it (4:19 listed; 4:21 actual)
3-crossroads revisited (4:45 listed; 4:47 actual)
4-haunted by your love (4:59 listed; 5:00 actual)
5-lies (extended version) (5:20 listed; 5:20 actual)
this one doesn't say where it's made, but it also may be an
england pressing because the times are noted as (4'39 and
not as 4:39)

Hey Ed, thanks for the details on your import CD singles! When I put
my list together, I hadn't researched those.

Jim, what is the catalog number of your "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" single?

Mine is DRAW412, and the reason I ask is because although the disc itself lists it as "remix", it plays a shorter album version with no added production.

Or does the fact that there is a "blend" of sections at 2:39 and not a "cold" cut make it eligible to be called "Remix"?

I wanted to know precisely the same thing. :)

Jim's UK single is also DRAW 412. The CD itself says "Remix" for track 1, but the back of the cardboard sleeve states "Edited Version." I compared track 1 to the LP version, and I also hear no mix differences.

That said, there is something odd that occurs at 2:37 that is certainly not on the LP version. During the line "What am I gonna do?" there is a jump in volume on the high frequencies only. On the UK CD single, it only lasts for a split second, but it's very noticeable. Even more strange is that this same jump in high frequencies also happens on the copy found on the Atlantic Year In Review 1987 CD, but it lasts for nearly a full second.

When time permits, I'll pull out the stock 45 copy I have to see if this same audio glitch appears on the 7" single.

I've found an alternate promo CD single for this. It's
a 3" disc, Geffen CDS 9. Listed 4:20 / actual 4:24.

It's marked promo-only, but unclear whether this was
intended for radio or another audience (press, etc.).
Did radio get many 3" promos?
