I have "Turtle Power" (Single Edit) on a radio compilation disc that runs 3:54. Not sure if there is more than one edit, or if Whitburn's time is incorrect.

Thanks for the updates, Aaron and Brian. I have one of my own to add:

Divine - One More Try ==> Single - 4:09. Album - 5:02.
I came across a commercial CD single copy and it indeed contains the "Radio Edit". I don't have a copy of the song running 5:02, so I can't conclude if the single really is an edit or just an early fade.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Iggy Pop with Kate Pierson - Candy ==> Album - 4:13. (Whitburn - 4:01)

Jesse Powell - You ==> Single - 4:02. Album - 5:17. (available on vinyl 45)
Edtop40 tells me his commercial single copy runs 4:02, but I don't know if it's an edit or an early fade of the album.

Kelly Price - Friend of Mine ==> Album - 5:29. (Whitburn - 4:14) (available on vinyl 45)
Commercial CD single copies features the "radio edit" with a printed run time of 4:16.

Prince with Sheena Easton - The Arms of Orion ==> Single length - 3:51. Album length - 5:02. (available on vinyl 45)
My commercial cassette single copy states "Edit" on the label but incorrectly states a run time of (3:40). I'm unable to do a direct A/B comparison between a cassette and CD, but as far as I can tell the single is an early fade, not an edit.

Prince - Diamonds and Pearls ==> Single - 4:20. Album - 4:45. (available on vinyl 45)
Credit goes to Ed once again for providing the single run time. He says the commercial single (version?) is what appears on Prince's The Hits 1 (Paisley Park 45431) CD. All other CD appearances running 4:19 are likely the single (version?) as well.

Prince - Money Don't Matter 2 Night ==> Single version - 4:10. Album version - 4:46. (available on vinyl 45)
My cassingle states "Edit" on the label.

Prince - My Name Is Prince ==> Album - 6:38. (Whitburn - 4:00) (available on vinyl 45)

Prince - The Most Beautiful Girl in the World ==> Single - 4:06. Album - 4:36.

Prince - Letitgo ==> Album - 5:32. (Whitburn - 4:12) (available on vinyl 45)

Prince - I Hate U ==> Album - 5:53. (Whitburn - 4:27) (available on vinyl 45)
Based on Whitburn's listed run time, it appears commercial single copies contains the "Edit" version.

Prodigy - Firestarter ==> Album - 4:39. (Whitburn - 3:45)
According to my research, commercial single copies states "Edit".

Puff Daddy & The Family featuring The Notorious B.I.G. & Mase - Been Around the World ==> Album - 5:25 and 5:14. (Whitburn - 4:00)
Commercial single copies are reported to feature the "Radio Edit" with a printed run time of 4:04 or 4:05 depending on the single format.

My US commercial 2-track CD single contains the Radio Edit (actual 4:04... doesn't start playing till the one second mark, so it inaccurately appears as 4:05) b/w the Shot-Caller Rock Remix of "It's All About the Benjamins."

I don't think I ever mentioned that the 45-length version of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" actually was issued on CD from a tape source many years ago. (According to Pat, it was taken from vinyl on the "Chicken Soup for the Woman's Soul" CD). It was released way back in '88 on the fledgeling US CD3 single format, a two-track "Hall of Fame"-type single containing it and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun."

I've had it all these long years, and last week I finally bought the 45, got the wave forms for both in sync on my PC, and A/B'd them. They are indeed the same. You can even hear some tape hiss during the last couple seconds before it blacks out if you turn the volume up. (Which is how I know it's the true 45 master and not just someone trying to fade the LP version early.) It does run a hair slower than the 45 was mastered though, about two seconds longer, running an actual 3:52.

Too bad the folks at Rhino didn't know this existed before they mastered that CD "Chicken Soup" CD from vinyl!

Brian, is this a case where the 45 mix is different, or is it an edit of the LP version? Or is it an early fade of the LP version?

It sounds to me like it's just an early fade of the LP version.

The 45 version of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" is not an early fade. If you edit out the first instrumental loop right after the chorus from 1:37 to 1:45 on the LP version, you essentially get the 45 version.

Thanks, Todd. I had not compared it directly with the LP version.

No problem, Brian!

Puff Daddy featuring R. Kelly - Satisfy You ==> Single version - 4:32*. Album version - 4:45. (Whitburn - 4:30)
Commercial single copies contain the "Radio Mix". I have it on an import CD single which incorrectly states a run time of 4:19. My research indicates the run time is incorrectly listed at 4:19 on U.S. commercial and promo DJ single copies as well.

Quad City DJ's - Space Jam ==> Single - 3:38*. Album - 5:05. (Whitburn - 3:38)
Commercial single copies are reported to contain the "radio edit".

Rampage featuring Billy Lawrence - Take It to the Streets ==> Album - 3:59. (Whitburn - 3:35)

Shabba Ranks featuring Johnny Gill - Slow and Sexy ==> Album - 5:19. (Whitburn - 3:54)
Commercial cassette single copies are reported to contain the "radio edit".

Rappin' 4-Tay featuring The Spinners - I'll Be Around ==> Album - 5:14. (Whitburn - 4:02)
Based on Joel Whitburn's listed run time, it looks like the single version/length can be found on the various artist CD Dance Max Volume 1 (EMI-Capitol Music Special Markets 18979). I'm not able to confirm this so hopefully someone else can.

Restless Heart - I'll Still Be Loving You ==> Single length - 3:59. Album length - 4:16. (available on vinyl 45)
Thanks, Edtop40, for helping me out with this one.

Tony Rich Project - Nobody Knows ==> Single version - 4:22*. Album version - 5:06. (Whitburn - 4:22)
The single almost appears to be just an early fade of its album counterpart, but the single actually has an edit right around the 4:02 mark as the song is beginning to fade (compare the two versions and you'll hear different verses sung at this point). I suspect the single version is on the following CDs: 90's R&B (Compass Productions 973070766) and 90's R&B (Compass Productions 973070896).

Lionel Richie - Dancing on the Ceiling ==> Single version - 4:23. Album version - 4:31. (available on vinyl 45)
The single version does not contain the :10 introduction found on the album version featuring Lionel Richie talking out loud to himself while walking to a party.

Riff - My Heart Is Failing Me ==> Single version - 3:39. Album version - 4:19.
The commercial single is also known as the '7" Radio Edit'. It's very difficult to make a judgment here as to whether the difference between the 3:39 single and 4:19 album is one of "version" or "length". The two are exactly the same up until 3:37. At this point on the single, a slight trace of reverb is still heard on the closing vocal during the song's final two seconds. By contrast, the keyboards and percussion start back up on the album before the vocals have fully faded out. Based on the policies we established in the Cyndi Lauper "Change of Heart" discussion earlier in this message thread, my verdict here is that the single and album renditions of "My Heart Is Failing Me" is a difference of "version".

Roger - I Want to Be Your Man ==> Single length - 3:58. Album length - 4:10. (available on vinyl 45)
The commercial single guru Edtop40 comes through once again!

Rome - I Belong to You (Every Time I See Your Face) ==> Album - 4:32. (Whitburn - 3:54) (available on vinyl 45)
My research suggests that promo and commercial single copies feature the "radio edit".

Rome - Do You Like This ==> Album - 4:52. (Whitburn - 4:06) (available on vinyl 45)

Todd,

Any idea of whether the timing differences for "Do You Like This" by Rome is due to an early fade or a real "version"?

Pat:

I did some additional research on Rome's "Do You Like This" and it looks like commercial single copies feature the "radio edit". If it is indeed an edit, then the single would have to be considered a real "version". But since I don't have a copy of the retail single, I of course can't say for sure.

Todd, I have the commercial single of this song, and the lead off track is the "Timber Radio Mix." The 4:02 run time looks correct, but I'll actually pull out the disc and check it when I get home.

This has been driving me nuts! I have the 45 packed away at my parents' house, and I thought that the 10 second intro was cut off, but my book doesn't mention anything about this, so I figured I was losing my mind and that the intro was on there. Thanks for clearing this up.

Yep, I have the commercial single and it does have the radio edit. Whitburn's time looks right, but I'll check this one, too, when I get home.

Rappin' 4-Tay - I'll Be Around - The actual name of the mix is the "Timber Mix - Radio Version." It's quite a bit different from the LP version, and the actual run time is 4:00.

Rome - I Belong To You - Actual run time is 3:58 for the "Radio Edit."

My cd titled "Dance Max Volume One" does not specify if the song "I'll Be Around" by Rappin' 4-Tay is the "Timber Mix" which Aaron says is the 45 version. Does anyone have this cd so you can shed some light on what version this might be?

I just listened to a song snippet online for "I'll Be Around" on the Dance Max Volume One CD. This version is NOT the "Timber Mix"; it appears to be track 2 from the CD single, which is the "Album Edit."

Thanks, Aaron and Pat for your input.

Linda Ronstadt featuring Aaron Neville - All My Life ==> Single length - 3:26. Album length - 3:30. (available on vinyl 45)
Edtop40 tells me the song fades approximately four seconds sooner on the cassette single than on the album. Not sure if this is considered a big enough run time difference to warrant a single/album length distinction though. We'll leave that to Pat to decide.

Roxette - Dressed for Success ==> Single length - 3:46.   Album length - 4:09. (available on vinyl 45)
According to Ed, the commercial vinyl 45 is an early fade. We don't know if this is also the case on the cassette single. Does anyone have a copy who can tell us?

RTZ - Until Your Love Comes Back Around ==> Single version - 4:20. Album single - 5:52. (available on vinyl 45)
Commercial single copies state "Edit" on the label.

Rude Boys - Written All over Your Face ==> Single version - 4:31. Album version - 6:20. (available on vinyl 45)

Rythm Syndicate - Hey Donna ==> Single version - 3:56. Album version - 4:37. (available on vinyl 45)

Raphael Saadiq - Ask of You ==> Album - 6:00. (Whitburn - 4:20)

Salt-N-Pepa - Expression ==> Single version - 4:43. Album version - 3:53. (available on vinyl 45)
These next three entries are once again courtesy of Ed the Commercial Single Guru. The retail cassette single features the "Brixton Radio (Exclusive U.K. Remix)" on the A-side, which is identical to the mix found on the CD A Blitz of Salt-N-Pepa Hits (New Plateau 1025 and 828365). In the 10th edition, the song is shown with the comment "remixed" on that particular CD but this remix is actually the single version..

Salt-N-Pepa - Let's Talk About Sex ==> Single version - 4:42. Album version - 3:29.
The retail cassette single contains the "Super Crispy Remix", which is identical to the mix found on the CD A Blitz of Salt-N-Pepa Hits (New Plateau 1025 and 828365). Again in the 10th edition, the song is shown with the comment "remixed" on that particular CD but this remix is actually the single version.

Salt-N-Pepa featuring En Vogue - Whatta Man ==> Single version - 4:26. Album version - 4:53 or 5:07. (available on vinyl 45)
The commercial single contains the "video remix" version. I notice the song runs 5:07 on Salt-N-Pepa's Very Necessary (Next Plateau 828392) CD and only 4:53 on En Vogue's Runaway Love (Eastwest 92296) disc. Pat, do you know if the one running 5:07 is simply an extended version of the one running 4:53?

Salt-N-Pepa - None of Your Business ==> Album - 3:32. (Whitburn - 3:17)

Santana featuring Rob Thomas - Smooth ==> Single - 4:01*. Album - 4:55. (Whitburn - 4:04)
The single version/length is on the CD Totally Hits (Arista 14625). That disc is shown in the 10th edition with the comment "radio edit".

Chantay Savage - I Will Survive ==> Album - 6:12. (Whitburn - 4:41) (available on vinyl 45)
From what I can gather, it appears commercial single copies contain the "Original LP Version". Judging by Whitburn's listed run time, there's a good possibility the single version/length is on the CD Back on My Feet Again (Relativity 1688).
