Yes, the single version can be created from the LP. Apparently, the T/L folks just goofed on their edit. The edit points referenced by Roscoe refer to the segments in the LP version that need to be cut.

To anyone interested in tracking down the correct 45 version of Electric Light Orchestra's "Can't Get It out of My Head" on CD, I have it on an ELO 2-CD UK import set called Light Years: The Very Best of on Epic 489039. The set is still in print and brand new copies can currently be purchased on popular online retail sites like Amazon for as little as $10-$12!

About three months ago, Epic/Legacy issued a new CD, The Essential Electric Light Orchestra, which differs from the 2003 release of the same title. It contains an 'edit' version of 'Can't Get It Out Of My Head' running about 3:06 described in the database as 'neither the 45 nor LP version'. I purchased a download of the track and compared it to the Time-Life CD. The two differ in the key 1:12 to 1:33 time period, with the new CD in line with Jim's description of his 45, but since I don't own an original 45 myself I can't say with certainty that this is the 45 version.

Thanks Paul for finding this 45 version and Pat for confirming. Are "Telephone Line" and "Evil Woman" the remaining two ELO 45 versions still MIA?

I have the actual 45...the ONLY single version, if anyone's still wonderin', is listed as 3:05 and lacks 1) the first chorus and second verse 2) the descending harpsichord (like) notes and 3) a (to my ears) heaving, cat meow like sound right before (as on the single) as the instrumental part notes ascend and the instrumental part ends, going to the final verse.
No speeding up (a la the group's "Evil Woman").

Unless one is going to issue a needledrop of the
"Telephone Line" 45, it will never be issued on CD. The
unique telephone signals on the intro are in different
spots than the common LP version. The tones were added
during the disk cutting stage by Kevin Gray.

Grant actually posted this in the "Telephone Line" thread awhile back,
so here is a quote from Kevin Gray:

If I'm reading this correctly, that means there are multiple LP
versions where the phone sound effects would be slightly different
between each lacquer. However, he says they also made a tape copy
in the same way they did the lacquers, and everything after that would
have been taken from the 2-track tape they made that day. This would,
of course, mean the single would have to be taken from that tape, too,
correct?

I only have the LP version on three discs, but I have a clear favorite: Legacy/Epic's 2-CD Strange Magic The Best Of (1995).
The two others are Jet's ELO's Greatest Hits (1986), and Telstar UK's 2-CD Very Best Of (1989). Neither sound good for this track.
45 version (3:06)
Here are instructions for creating the 45 edit using Strange Magic The Best Of as the source:
Segment 1
Extends from 0:00.0 to 0:48.2 of the LP version and the 45 edit
Ends on a downbeat at the beginning of the word "can't"
Remove 80 beats from 0:48.2 to 1:46.7 of the LP version
Segment 2
44 beats long
Begins on a downbeat at the beginning of the word "can't"
Extends from 0:48.2 to 1:20.0 of the 45 edit
Extends from 1:46.7 to 2:18.5 of the LP version
Ends on a downbeat
Remove 12 beats from 2:18.5 to 2:27.0 of the LP version
Segment 3
8 beats long
Begins on a downbeat
Extends from 1:20.0 to 1:25.7 of the 45 edit
Extends from 2:27.0 to 2:32.6 of the LP version
Ends on a downbeat
Remove 12 beats from 2:32.6 to 2:41.0 of the LP version
Segment 4
Begins on a downbeat
Extends from 1:25.7 to 3:06.5 (end) of the 45 edit
Extends from 2:41.0 to 4:21.9 (end) of the LP version
Your mixdown will run 3:06.5, with edits at 0:48.2, 1:20.0, and 1:25.7.
The version on Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 16 1975 Take Two (1991) differs from about 1:04 to about 1:32, and uses the wrong portions of the LP version. I didn't spend any time reverse-engineering this incorrect version. The same analog transfer is used on Starland/Warner Special Products' 2-CD Lost In Love (1994).
